Telkom IP Voice Service

Got these setting from Telkom support: Saying this is for Pretoria area code. Registration still fails

I no longer have my Telkom voip account, but my A510IP gigaset does not have the length limitation that your unit appears to have. I managed to save a longer authentication name value without any problems:

May I suggest that you check whether there are firmware updates available for your gigaset. You check this by going to Settings -> Management -> Firmware upgrade and clicking the 'Upgrade Firmware' button. The upgrade process will run automatically and result in a restart of the base station. Do not disconnect the power while the upgrade is taking place and allow it a few minutes to complete. The base station might be inaccessible for a few minutes during the upgrade. Check your loadshedding schedule before initiating the process to avoid problems.

Referring to Post #32, there used to be a section on the Telkom website that showed your account status as registered. I assume that this is required before the account will work. Please confirm that status by logging into the Telkom website.

Other steps that you could try is to disable the account on the Gigaset and try to set it up on a cellphone to confirm that it is working. You could try an app like Zoiper which is free.

Greeting everyone
Does anyone know if the Telkom VoIP system is still working or totally down?
if down, how long ?

I have tried all the SIP server IPs but they all timeout and never connect.

Hi All,
I also want to join the Telkom VoIP service (btw I am very content with the Telkom fibre line) but up to now I failed. In year 2021 I changed my landline phone to Fibre to the home (FTTH), and I was told to receive a letter with my VoIP credentials (contract was made by phone). I never received that letter. On the installation date they configured on my Nokia ONT G-240-GE an analogue telephone line and spoken to Telkom they told me I have bought a so called B-line. What can I do now to receive the VoIP credentials to configure my router and phones by myself? Any answer is very appreciated.
Thanks a lot for your help, kind regards, Fritz the cat

They also have a Soft Phone app, that you can use for making/receiving calls if you don't want to buy a physical phone

Thanks a lot mh348 and William1102 for your quick answers, I double checked that and these are additional costs, also I cannot phone Telkom if service is needed from another line. I tried Afrihost in the past, but it did not work (the called one could not hear me ...). So I would really like to stay at Telkom, but thanks again!

I just tried calling 10210 (Telkom) from my SwitchTel line and the call goes through, so you can Definitely still call Telkom..

It's Apparent from this thread and others, Telkom's support on VOIP is non-existent, I'd rather pay R49 a month for a line from SwitchTel or another provider.

Thank you very much for testing, then it is really an option I will take, I agree the Telkom support is pretty pathetic. I will give SwitchTel a try.

Hi All, after three weeks within the Switch Telecom service I will report my experiences:

- First of all the service works, I can be heard and I can hear the called. I configured my router with the SIP credentials. I can use all my phones now, analog, ISDN, DECT, IP-phone connected to the router.
- SIP configuration was straight forward and easy
- What still does not work is calling the Telkom # 10219 via the new telephone number that differs from my landline number. You get the Telkom error "This is not a recognized telephone number ...", but 10210 and 10213 work both. That is already the game changer, to open an error ticket f.e. - just great.
- Buying airtime is a little bit more complicated compared to Afrihost where you got for the fees you paid automatically the same amount as airtime. That was cheaper of course, but it mainly did not work well - so I cancelled Afrihost.
- The service from Switch Telecom is absolutely professional and quick, one cannot do better I think. Even our service lines in Germany are not good as that.

Thanks to all who brought me on the right track (thanks to mh 348 and William1102), hope my experience helps someone else,
kind regards,
Fritz the cat

Just a small necro, but I could use some advice.

I’ve been helping my parents migrate their landline to IP Voice. They want to stay with Telkom, so I recommended the IP Voice package (R145) and set them up with a Grandstream WP816 cordless Wi‑Fi 6 phone.

However, when they spoke to Telkom, the sales agent steered them toward SmartVoice instead with a “free” phone and SIM card and they went ahead and signed up for that.

This seems completely at odds with what I recommended, especially since they’re on fibre with MWEB. From what I understand, SmartVoice is more of a mobile/cellular-based solution, not a proper VoIP-over-fibre setup.

I’m now unsure how best to fix or correct this situation. Any advice please? Thanks.

From personal experience, Telkom's IP voice service is pathetic. I think your parents are better off with the Telkom Smart Voice package, which is more stable doesn't require any support or troubleshooting to operate.

I tried Telkom IP Voice for a while, but it didn’t really work for me. I then switched to SwitchTel’s VoIP service, which has been significantly better and works without any issues.

I see, thanks for the advice. I guess now, I have to return the Grandstream phone then, as Telkom seems intent in giving them a free ip phone and sim...

@Rick Sanchez: I am using the Havex Small Fish Prepaid VOIP service which has been working reasonably well for me with my Cool Ideas Vodacom 5G service. Local calls cost around 33c per minute and there are no recurring monthly fees. You are only required to keep a positive prepaid balance.

I ported my Telkom landline across to them and am using the service on a cheap open box (~R200 from BoB) Fanvil X3S Lite VOIP phone which is connected via an Ethernet cable to my G5TS 5G router. I think this is a great Telkom landline replacement which might also be of interest to you.
