Telkom Line Speed doubling?

Telkom bumped all the 512 mbps users up to 1 mbps around 2005, then in 2006 or 2007 they bumped the 1 mbps users up to 4 mbps at no extra cost. So yes, there is precedent for them doing this.

It was very dumb of them to not do anything for the 384k users. Now you have a tenfold disconnect between the entry level users and the high end users....just doesn't make sense.

I don't have any evidence, but I have a feeling they will bump up the minimum speed this time around. The 384k users started out at 192k didn't they?

yes they did, Gary
384k was very welcome, but it's got to be 1mb this time
please nothing less, Telkom :(

This would be good, however, something like this coupled with line rental removal (for voice) or significant reduction for both voice & ADSL would make Telkom almost as popular as Afrihost then! :eek::D

Didn't 192k users get bumped up to 4mb or something?
LOL in which world?

192 -> 384
512 -> 512
1 meg -> 4 meg

On this topic, the 4 meg guys got their upload speed increased too, so I'd be really pissed if the 4 meg guys are the only ones who get upgraded again.

Well, you got to remember that there are thousands more subscribers at the lower end of the scale, even though the 4 meg users are paying more, Telkom is not making much more because (1) there are less of them and (2) there are higher costs involved with keeping a 4 meg line running (there are less maintenance and reliability issues with a 384 or 512 line). So Telkom's cash cow are the lower end users, they basically subsidise everyone else. Now last I heard was that Telkom pegged their break even point at 1 mbps, so basically everyone above that is a loss to them anyway. So maybe they will bump everyone up to that point, but they don't want to push them higher than that or it becomes unprofitable.

lets hope this is tru :D

and lets at least celebrate it, every1 knows broadband in this country is pathetic compared to international standard, but it is what it is. we cant keep comparing local to international - rather lets just be happy when things r improved - albeit to something which is still far below international standards.

I'm on 384 at the moment.

Don't think getting bumped to something higher would help as then I'd end up using twice as much bandwidth in a month which I can't afford. And they sure as ***** are not going to change what a gig of data costs.

Why don't they just upgrade evrybody to the fastest speed they can get, at the 384 rate?
AFAIK, the current speed limits are just artifical limits at the exchange.

With hard capping in place would they lose much? Many people would just spend the money saved on additional bandwidth.

lol, it obviously wont happen, if anything it will be lower size accounts that will be upgraded and then they can con you that its a new speed when in reality its just another speed under 4 mbs, and to think i almost believed it , lol sure

512 mbps - nice!!! i want that :)

Faster DSL based on 512 technology = R326 ...it has never been upgraded since it started end of August 2002.

all of this is dependant on ur Exchange supporting that line speed..

up in pmb most of the exchanges can only support 384kbps! so maybe they should focus on upgrading their exchanges before increasing everyones speed.

no point having the speed available to u but u cant access it becos some idiot decided not to upgrade ur exchange!

I'm getting 512 speeds on my 384 line for a week or so now?

Better check with Telkom. Your more than likely been bumped up to 512 and they going to charge you for it :)

I'm holding out for the 1st Oct - I EXPECT (from all the rumours) to be upgraded from 384 to 1M. Nothing less. 784k would just be daft.

Otherwise I'm going take the plunge and go 4M.

Tick....tock....tick....tock.

I would bank on by the end of October and not necessarily the 1st. And also, dont be shocked if you get bumped to 512 and not 1024. Telkom love to surprise us you know...
