Telkom Line Speed doubling?

besides the 8mbit trial i have heard nothin of other speed increases for 384/512 users

A friend of mine in the Netherlands was just notified her line has been bumped from 24mb to 64 mb. No charge, no extra cost. It's just normal development in IT. At least in NL, which have the bestest connectivity in all of EU. But still, it's about time Telkom and Neotel and whoever supplies our telco systems here wakes up and set their @$$ in motion.

64mb? hell.... thats almost 8MB/s...... its just sad how bad our telecommunications are in the republic.....

Still got 384k here.

Maybe it's just because it's outside office hours and it's a local server that I experience such good speed.

I seriously doubt Telkom has upped (or ever will up) our line speed.

Well it happened in the past already. When they got rid of 192k 'broadband' and bumped everyone up a level.

me too :D.

but on a serious note, have you ever tried playing Battle Field 2 on 192K line? or Crysis Wars on a 384k line??? It kinda works a little, but you deal with an out body lag :p. ha ha, you just about put your crosshairs on the enemy, fire, and he's gone. then you get shot :erm:

But uploading large files is the best. a 120 mb file (uploaded it to my brother) took like 6 hours. I went to my friends house, got drunk, sobered up, then drove home and it was still uploading :p.

wait, something else has happened. Telkom is giving me an extra 2 gig's on data for free??? I was on 3gig's cap, now I have 5gig's cap. wtf?

Yes, uploading is ridiculous. :o

Well if they're are going to do this upgrade, does it mean my 39kbps download will become 78kbps? We can only hope.

lol, that 39kbps download is maddening. I mean where else does it take like 10 minutes to download a song :p.

but just wait until you must send large image files (100+mb) to where ever. It's true insanity. I use a peer to peer to send the files as well (Piole has a feature to send items to a friend, it's a lot faster then emailing :p).

But why do I have an extra 2gigs? it's sorta like giving me tube after you've a$$ raped me for hours... my ar$e is so massive lube just won't help.

The most frustrating thing about my DSL 384 'service' is that uploading emails with size greater than 500kb just doesn't happen. It says it hasn't sent it, holds in the outbox to send again, and just keeps doing that until the cows come home. In the meantime the mail gets successfully sent and sent and sent ... and I become a class A1 spammer!!! :(

Off-topic... but try a local email provider such as Vodamail together with a local cap and it'll go through no problem

Or 1Mb. Wouldn't hurt ;)

:D ... I'll take that!!!

I have to look at an alternative for uploading mail. Sending photos to family is becoming a pain. Not all of them are gifted to look at site where one can upload photos to. :(

Why don't they just upgrade evrybody to the fastest speed they can get, at the 384 rate?
AFAIK, the current speed limits are just artifical limits at the exchange.

No, it's not that simple. When you increase the subscriber speed, you have to increase the backhaul capacity, ATM capacity, SDH capacity, more ports on routers etc All these things cost money.

My speed is still very close to a 512kb line today.

Are speeds supposed to be up to 20KB/s faster when it is cached on the Akamai server? I'm getting a constant 50-68KB/s on a 384kb line

Its impossible to get those speeds on a 384 line. Or even 68kb per second on a 512 line. Theoretically a 384 and 512 line are limited to 48 and 64kb per sec respectively. Have you checked your router to see what speed your syncing at? Im still at 384 unfortunately
