So ya...it seems Telkom started their local bandwidth measuring as of today. I tried browsing now, and couldn't access international, then went to telkomsa.net, and low and behold, the usage tracker has changed and there's a message about local bandwidth measuring being in a test phase. Now, obviously local works fine, since I'm posting here. What I'm wondering about though, is how much this local bandwidth is costing me? As far as I know Telkom hasn't mentioned any prices yet. Would be nice to know what's happening...

Wishful thinking says, since they're only testing atm, that local's free, but I haven't been lucky lately and thus, would prefer not pushing my luck ;)

Hi Mesugga

Thanks for the information.

Can you please post a screenshot if possible?

Thanks and regards,

RPM

Bleh, forgot I can post pics here. Hold on and I'll post a couple

Uploaded in the gallery. Front page and page when logged in to the tracker. I have higher res shots of course, so if anyone wants them, just ask

The other change to TI is that they now allow you to purchase additional "blended bandwidth" without buying a new account. This "Topup" costs R64.76 per GB. I do not know what the effect on the "collective threshold" that TI has applied in the past will be. Per their support line this will now fall away. My own usage for Nov seems to imply that they are still allowing double your purchased bandwidth on a 3GB account.

Edit:

Got the same notice at login. . .
Please note: Local Bandwidth is in a testing phase and more details will be communicated at a later stage.
Please ignore usage that accruse on the Local Bandwidth tracking tool and will have no impact on your original blended threshold purchased.
And you can generate 3 different types of reports
TI Report(DSL Usage) SAIX Compliant Report(DSL Usage) Audit Trail(All Usage)

Just in case local's free, I decided to download a movie or two, just to check ;P Guess I'll see next month whether they charged me for it, or not

Good idea - although I don't think they will charge for local until they have sent out a formal notification to that effect. AFAIK TI does not sell any local only packages and no price for local is on their website.

Im downloading as much local as I can get, I dont think they can charge you if there is no pricing structure or formal notification, As far as I see it if they are giving you accesss currently its like back in 2005 where local was free after you are capped

Have these tariff changes been submitted to and approved by ICASA?

AFAIK the adsl tariffs do not form part of the basket of tariffs that require ICASA approval. Telkom via SAIX does have a local tariff and package (wholesale) but I don't think their retail arm TI has ever sold a local only package.

EDIT:
BTW on my latest usage email received this morning they still refer to the collective threshold option which you are automatically transfered to once your individual service threshold has been reached.

Does this mean I can download from a local torrent site and not use my international cap?

No unless you have multiple accounts. Your initial cap is all usage, local + international, (TI refers to "blended usage") and once that has been fully used your account is apparently allocated a local only IP.

So what level is this local only access capped at?

So what level is this local only access capped at?

No details yet. AFAIK nobody has been capped for November on the local only account - the only question is will it be charged and at what rate

I have a big total-traffic discrepancy between the Telkom Usage tracker (secure.telkomsa.net) and the SAIX ADSL stats page (userstats.adsl.saix.net).

The SAIX page says I have used a total of 2.3GB cumulative for November and the Telkom one says i haven't even cracked 1.2GB cumulative. The Local traffic stat on the Telkom Tracker is still on 0 and both register my details up to the latest disconnect.

That's because their tracker went down due to complications with the upgrade. I had 100mb left on my cap around the 5th, when the tracker first went down. Since then, I've done a hell of a lot of browsing and youtube'ing and I only got capped again last night, when the tracker came online, saying that I've down 1gb, so obviously there was a period of time no bandwidth measuring took place

I saw this on Telkoms site:

Is it free?!?!?!?
