I think this has been a lesson for both providers and consumers with regards to the limitations of LTE and the like, as well as an illustration of just how dramatically the modern, connected person's or family's data usage is skyrocketing. We can be sure that any similar product launched by anyone in future will have much clearer boundaries set, and in a world where wireless internet cannot yet reasonably support people binging for days in 4K resolution, that's not a bad thing.

The question's been asked, but others have expressed doubts over whether Telkom's systems (and/or systems engineers, mind you) would even be capable of that. Of course it would be the better solution, but such systems would take time and money to develop, test and implement. We need a quick fix, even if a temporary one.

I hear what you are saying. And I am a little guilty of going on the binge every now and again, but ag no ja. Telkom do have a system in place that does that on their DSL products and since this is a matter of data, I still have my doubts about it being a matter of spectrum(I have my own reasons and test in my area), it is all within their own stream.

But I could also be 100% wrong. :D

In principal, I do not like the idea of a soft cap or anything to that affect on this "Uncapped" package, but I totally get that it is most likely a hardware and possibly even a backhaul issue (expanded too quickly etc). Granted, this is not a problem the end user should deal with, but it is what it is. As such, I like that we, as a community, are coming together to reach some sort of middle ground - we know Telkom reads these forums.

I know that LTE and ADSL are fundamentally different in terms of architecture and, for LTE, spectrum. But do you think it would be feasible to implement something along the lines of R1 per GB of data with a soft cap? (Afrihost, for example, have capped packages that offer R1 for 1 GB).

With the above in mind, do you think Telkom would offer users a 800 GB soft cap for the R799 that they are currently paying (those on R599 and R699 have the same soft cap of 800GB - as they shouldn't be penalised for signing up early)?

Thereafter, Telkom can throttle the speed to 4Mbps, to curb heavy users, but still allow for SD streaming via YouTube/Netflix/Showmax etc.

If users want "full speed", they can purchase additional bandwidth at R1 per GB.

That way, those users who want to use 1 TB, 2 TB, 3 TB can do so, they just need to pay for it over and above the normal rental.

I would also, personally, not mind if Telkom permanently throttled P2P and NNTP protocols for this service, since it is really not needed if we are able to stream content.

So in some strange twist of fate. I get home today to discover my speeds are in the mid 50's again. And my usage is something like 220GB. *double headscratch*

“We understand that quality data connectivity is in high demand and our new FUP reflects our understanding of this.”

“However, in instances where existing LTE Uncapped customers may have requirements beyond what we can cater for on this specific LTE product, we would like to engage these customers on alternative products better suited to their needs.”

“We are also willing to release these customers impacted by the FUP from their existing contracts without any penalty.”

I am somewhat happy with the new AUP, but I still wish there was an option to "topup" your speed. R100 for 100GB or to allow the connection to be used as last mile and allow PPPOE connection over it so we could use data from other providers.

Is this even possible with non-fixed line?

Depends on the systems at the backend. As far as I know, the protocols LTE runs across do no forbid it and it seems possible.

Wouldn't it be great though.
