telkom misleading offers

I recently ordered a 10M ADSL line from Telkom after checking my options for internet service at my current residence. I was told up to 10 M is available and subsequently ordered a 10M uncapped line. Long story short, the technician activated/installed the necessary line on the existing phone line and I activated the internet. 2 Days later I get a voice message from Telkom stating that in fact 10 M is not available and I am only limited to 4 M and can cancel my order with a refund. Is this typical service for a national telephone and internet service? I am very disappointed as I would have preferred a 40 M line but accepted that 10 M would be fine as it is the fastest available.

A friend who lives about 1 km a way has a 20 M line and thus I cannot understand the vast difference in speeds available in a certain community.

Any advice on what to do as far as do I keep the 4 M line or can I convince them to make the 10 M line somehow available? Also how to the other ISPs work in this country; do they use the existing Telkom infrastructure and is LTE a better option? This is not available to me by TELKOM but I am on the verge of purchasing a LTE router from AXXESS for a good deal but not sure on reliability.

Very unacceptable service, what seems to be happening is that Sales is doing their thing, selling stuff to customers even though they aren't sure whether they are capable of delivering the service or not. Technical then comes into the picture and realise that the service promised to the customers can't be provided.

It's an odd way of doing business and I think it's a deliberate thing that they do hoping to lure customers with false promises. They do give you an option to cancel though, so I guess it's a fair way of getting out if you wish.

Sounds par for the course not only for Telkom, but for just about service/product provider in this country.

Thanks for responding; does anyone have experience with a 4M line? This is difficult for me as I am coming from an area where I had a 100M line with average speeds of 60-75Mps.

Depends entirely what you intend doing with that line, I have a 2meg line and no complaints but then again I am not into online games and the only streaming I ever do is Youtube.

Why don't you check Telkom Mobile LTE offerings? expensive compared to ADSL but offer better user experience.

LTE is not available in my area. But it seems like the best option as I could perhaps just take the router to a different location during the day.

My situation is similar, after having a 10mb line for around 5/6 years, I got told (after logging a line fault a month ago) that because of the distance from the exchange I can't get 10mb any more. Currently syncing at between 3 & 4mb. Praying for fibre to rollout in my area so that I can ditch Telkom. :(
