Telkom Mobile 100Mbps LTE tested

Would've hoped for a little higher on the international speed tests..

LTE is really tempting, only concern is the cost of the data, and latency. Before I change to LTE, I'd rather try and get 10mbps ADSL. Better latency, and has an uncapped option.

It is approaching the upper limit of what can be achieved with a single threaded download when you take overheads/latency into consideration. If you run a multi-threaded download it will most likely match the local speeds.

The speedtest.net flash application already utilizes multiple threads, otherwise you wouldn't have had anything above 2Mbps with international downloads where the latency is more than 270ms.

I'd very much like to know where the LTE sites are in Cape Town area, because we're looking for a decent backup solution to our ADSL in Mitchell's Plain.

Nothing much to brag about seeing that LTE coverage is so minimal.

Yes, you are correct, those speedtests do use multiple connections.

I'm sure the max speed though for a single connection at 270ms is higher than 2Mbps though.

Running a test using testmy.net achieves speeds around 9 - 12Mbps on my end. Is only one thread as confirmed by pftop:

Code:
pfTop: Up State 1-61/61, View: default, Order: bytes
PR D SRC DEST STATE AGE EXP PKTS BYTES
tcp I 192.168.1.12:50774 75.126.77.87:80 4:4 20 86400 14796 17M
tcp O 192.168.1.12:50774 75.126.77.87:80 4:4 20 86400 14796 17M

Prices of the LTE rig have to come down a bit as well. Otherwise those speeds are sweet

If i am on edge or lte the price per gig is the same.
Why do i have to pay more for higher speed on adsl capped account? Would really like to know why?

Change your ISP, mate.

Not all ISPs do that. Afrihost for one doesn't on their capped ADSL products.

You pay the same per GB regardless of what speed your line is set to.

Well done... Great speeds and decent latency.

HOWEVER... What's going to happen when there are hundreds of people connected to their LTE, and how does other network's LTE traffic affect them. Sounds like a silly question, but if this does take off, the amount of allocated spectrum is limited. In the end, as with all current wireless technologies, congestion is going to get you once the network becomes busy...

Just putting it out there, even though the 70Mbps is pretty darn impressive.

I'm getting about 2 MegaBYTES (16Mbps) per second download on Steam on LTE with 1 bar of signal in Centurion area. It is certainly not oversubscribed and coverage is much wider than indicated on the map if you get an antenna.

The first time in a very long time that I actually want something that Helkom has to offer..
