I've listed and ordered the top 20 LTE speed test results.

Not a bad speed for 3G. You will enjoy LTE though, without a doubt.

Area: Faerie Glen, Pretoria East (about 4km east of Menlyn Park shopping mall)
Antenna system: Poynting twin LPDA-0020 ("V1") array, oriented at +45 and +135 degrees
Distance to tower: Approx 1.36km (assuming the connected tower is the one I think it is!)
Device: Huawei B593s-601 LTE modem/router
Connection mode : Forced 4G
Network Operator: Telkom Mobile (PLMN = 65502)
Service Provider: Telkom Internet
Signal parameters: RSSI=-48, RSRP=-74, RSRQ=-6
Result: see here
Date of test: Thursday 17 July 2014 @ 16:26

To be honest, this is my best result by a long short. Second fastest is 72.36 Mb/s and the rest are mostly in the 50's and 60's. I guess the early morning test must have made the difference.

The antenna makes a big difference as well, but I think this is because I live in a valley, and by having the antenna on the roof, it allows for better line of sight reception.

Definitely not a congestion issue. TM LTE is notorious for up and down LTE results. I also got a 73Mbps result and 50's after that. Recently it dropped to 10-20Mbps and I switched to MTN - back up to 30Mbps.

Send me those photos so I can post them for you....

Tested last night, best I can get from TM LTE is about 5mbps DL. Sometimes. Reception is 10%.

Usually fails and switches back to 3G. 3G is 20%, also quite poor, not worth pursuing.

You really have an excellent case for an outdoor antenna then. Considered it?

We've had huge success with outdoor antennas and LTE. See here. :)

Edit: didn't realise you had VDSL!

B880 screen capture.jpg

Thanks for the update, kurtg - very nice, image-ey post, btw ;-)

Nice that the B880 gives the Cell_ID - a very important feature that the B593's "simplified" software doesn't have. But a bit disappointing that the way of reporting RSSI, RSRP and RSRQ is not consistent between these two Huawei devices. A perfect example of how not to write software - thanks, Huawei !

Some more thoughts on that point and the content of these B880 screens is presented over here on the Huawei B593 thread where it belongs (well, sorta).

A great post nonetheless - thanks for sharing!
