Telkom mobile Bonus Wi-Fi Data - Secondary Device

Okay, so I have a prepaid SIM which I regularly reload with 60+60. Each time I top up with ZAR 100.00+ I get 10GB of Bonus Wi-Fi Data Unlimited Speed (So long as the last one has expired when I top up). This is all splendid.

I register the SIM in 'My Telkom Mobile Login', go into the page and in the Wi-Fi section at the bottom, I enter the MAC address of my laptop.

Now I know that many people (including many Telkom employees) say that you cannot use a secondary device on bonus Wi-Fi if the SIM is a prepaid SIM. However I can definitively confirm that I am connected to "1 Telkom Guest" on my laptop and have wonderful 8mbps connectivity.

The problem is that I want to change the MAC address on this SIM from this laptop, to my new laptop. So I login, and update the MAC address. It does not work.
I leave it for 24 hours, maybe the settings must propagate.
It does not work.
I let the current bundle expire, do not connect my old laptop for 3 days and connect with my new laptop only after a new bonus Wi-Fi bundle has been issued.
It does not work.

I change the MAC address back to my old laptop and it work instantaneously.

The bonus Wi-Fi data was convenient when I had it.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused.

To be honest we would not know how to resolve your query because as far as some technical constraints on our side the prepaid sim card does not work for a secondary device on free WiFI bundles.

I've always been curious about this. I use the 3g in my PC but I have no idea how the wi-fi stuff works

Hi Akasha,

That free WIFI bundle works in any of our hotspots on EAP Sim capable device. See the guidelines here :
For Android phones:
Go to device settings->Turn on Wi-Fi->Search for nearby Wi-Fi networks->Select 1 Telkom connect Wifi point->Change EAP method to use EAP-SIM or SIM on your device (if you cannot find EAP-Sim or SIM here then your device is not EAP-SIM capable) and click connect

For IPhones:
Go to http://www.telkommobile.co.za/downloads/ ->Download the Wi-Fi EAP-SIM Configuration file for Apple iOS->Install the downloaded file->Go to device settings->Turn on your Wi-Fi->Connect to Telkom Mobile Connect

For Blackberry Phones:
Go to Manage Connections->Select Wi-Fi Network-> Switch on Wi-Fi->Select 1 Telkom Connect Wi-Fi point->Change Enterprise Sub-Type to EAP-SIM or SIM on your device(if you cannot find EAP-Sim or SIM here then your device is not EAP-SIM capable)->Click Connect

Then for non EAP-Sim capable devices you need to add its secondary device in our portal. See for guidelines here http://www.telkommobile.co.za/wifi/ . Note that the adding of secondary device does not work for prepaid.

Then you could look what's happening on the one that works, and you can make everything your side the same on the one that does not work.

I pay plenty of money to Telkom for internet access I promise.

Hi,

As advised earlier that we cannot further assist. Providing your Telkom number will still not allow us to have the service working as we cannot even confirm why the old one is working.

" Can I use another, secondary device to access the Wi-Fi?

Yes, Telkom Mobile understands that you may need to use a different device other than the device that uses your SIM card to access the Wi-Fi service. Therefore, Telkom Mobile allows you to use a secondary device (e.g. a laptop or tablet) to access the Wi-Fi service activated on your SIM card. All you need to do is link the MAC address of your secondary device to the SIM card provisioned with the Free Unlimited Wi-Fi. This option is only applicable to contract offers that qualify for Free Unlimited Wi-Fi as a feature of the product and is not applicable to prepaid subscribers that qualify for Free Unlimited Wi-Fi based on airtime recharge."
