Telkom Mobile Free Wi-Fi tested

Odd as I used it at Cape Town International 3 weeks ago and it was very quick. Will test it in Rondebosch

I think it relies on where you use it. We tested on two different occasions at the same centre, and the experience was similar both times. Other people reported excellent speeds, which shows that it gives a good performance on some locations.
 
Write an article after testing at one location only? Really MyBroadband? I find it quite funny actually. LOL
 
Tested in Northgate area. Works like a bomb.

Do a few more tests and then give feedback. Also, this is the only network that actually had the ability to offer this. Thumbs up to Telkom Mobile.

I guess there's more than one person attempting to free the internet.
 
it works brilliantly at the mcdonalds in hillcrest and pietermaritzburg (in town, don't know about the one near the mall).

i'll have to do speed tests, but it should be good. i had no issues checking emails, using teamviewer, updating all the apps on my phone and downloading a ps3 update. :) also, the cappuccino is good there too.
 
Experienced exactly the same as MyBB at four different outlets in Pta east.
Sometimes it works brilliantly and then just fades away to virtually nothing.
Its for free but don't use it if an e-mail is important.
 
I accessed it from a Coffee shop 200m from the Telkom exchange. I was able to download about 1 GB in the hour.
 
In other words its exactly like AlwaysOn, Good in a few areas, painful in most.

Still it really does rock when you are away from home and can use wifi instead of wasting money on 3g. Hopefully it will get rolled out in more places.
 
I have used it in CPT at three different places and speeds were very good. When using my 8ta sim in my tabled it was pathetic.

Thats my thought exactly. The entire article is based on a single hotspot, talk about a lack of statistical evidence. I generally have good service from the hotspots, with an occasional one under performing.
 
Used it in Pta east at a number of places, varied between brilliant and useless. In Cape Town it was brilliant, but I think few people use it there.

seems as this article has been myth busted.
Its something we love and dont want this to be withdrawn due to this incorrect piece of reporting.

p.s how does it compare to the Always on free service? 50mb - 30 min throttle at 128k?

Easy to provide free access when you own the last mile infrastructure, there are far better providers (AlwaysOn) out there but have to rely on Telkom infrastructure in most cases to deliver the service.

It seems great now but the longer they hold on to the infrastructure the longer it will take to see true consumer savings across the board
