Telkom Mobile?

Hi guys.

I have been a vodacom customer for 10 years. After much deliberation, I am thinking of switching to Telkom due to their ridiculous deals and the fact that vodacom are so exorbitantly expensive. And their prices do not reflect their service.

My question to you is, do any of you have a Telkom sim? How is the network coverage and speed. Particularly in Joburg Pretoria and Cape Town?

Thanks for the help!

Your best option is to go and get a Telkom SIM yourself and see what the coverage is like in the areas you frequent.

Telkom Mobile roams on MTN where it doesn't have coverage and MTN pretty much has the country covered in much the same way as Vodacom

I have been with Telkom Mobile for about 4 years now.
Signal is great while driving. Signal in buildings is average.
Being able to roam on MTN is a big advantage as I switch constantly when I know what coverage is best where.

The only network that has tempted me to move away from TM is Cell C with their wifi-calling(I have bad network coverage for all 4 networks at home but really amazing VDSL so wifi calling would work perfectly), but they are expensive on data.

As ToxicBunny has suggested, get a prepaid sim and test for a week or so to make sure you are happy.

EDIT: I am in JHB

What he said.

Telkom is cheap. Been on prepaid with them for more than a year and just got a new contract with them about 3 months ago.
Very happy.

I'm happy with them. If I have bad reception with Telkom I switch to MTN and all is good

The best TM data packages do not roam MTN, but the same with Cell C (Giga100/200).

If you think getting contract with Telkom, don't do that, their customer service sucks.

For general contract use Cell C is better option than Telkom considering a wide native network. With roaming Vodacom they have the widest coverage in South Africa and WiFi calling is the strongest selling point.

You're guaranteed to get reception 80% of the time anywhere close to the major city hub.

The only few family members not yet on Telkom, complain about Vodacom service and signal constantly.

No out of bundle shark on Telkom is worth it just on its own.

After 15 years (more or less) on Vodacom, I took the plunge last week and got myself the R69.00 freeme topup contract on a month to month. So far so good. Haven't traveled much to check on call quality/drop-outs. For now , all works fine. Have the phone on auto roaming so have MTN as back up.
