Telkom monopoly over

Im all sure you remember what impact CellC had on prices when it had been introduced to the mobile market. Erm... none.

You think Transtel and Eskom are going to drop the prices that much?
 
Yep. I remember back in '92 (3 YEARS AGO!) when we were all so thrilled that Telkom's monopoly was "over". Even if the SNO is licensed and ready to go I think that there will be a cozy duopoly just like the cellphone companies. The only difference is that Telkom will have a friend in a year's time when they get hauled back before ICASA for the poor state of broadband in South Africa...
 
Ummm... shouldn't we give the SNO a chance to get going before judging them? Sheesh.

Man! I thought they were planning to roll out in december.

I guess this means next year April at the earliest?

Maybee, just maybee they burst onto the scene with such vervour that teklom is wiped out in less than 12 months. LOL - such a dreamer I are.

Do you guys honestly think anything will change ? Telkom is the same as the GVT , same organisation.

what will it finally change? The impact have to be much bigger then that. With only one extra competitor it will not make any difference.
 
on the other hand - note that quiet mention at the end about considering using wireless for the last mile - thus neatly avoiding needing to use Telkom's infrastructure.

Having just paid my Telkom bill for the month - if the SNO is the same price or cheaper than Telkom, watch how fast I switch across, and I don't think I'll be alone in that.
Cant wait to see what Internet options the SNO is going to offer..

The SNO could take the entire ADSL market over, by offering a cheaper rate. Ditto any kind of 24/7 dialup rate for modem users.
They could take the entire SA internet user market away from Telkom, in a couple of very easy steps. Maybe now's the time to send nosey emails at the various shareholders, expressing a hope that they will offer packages that bring SA in line with other countries internet offerings and pricing.

EDIT:
On the day that the SNO comes online - I vote that MyAdsl plans towards and holds a BIG PUBLIC mock funeral for Telkom (complete with coffins) - and sends out press releases inviting the Media to attend, and we hold it somewhere suitably insulting, like on the steps of Telkom HQ in Pretoria maybe?

Well, at the very least it'll be change of a sorts. And I'd still rather have a duopoly than a Telkom controlled monopoly. In many ways, this is no longer about getting Telkom to admit they are wrong or even about getting them to improve service. This has passed into the realms of vendetta. If they're losing profit, I'm happy.

As far as I know networking over power lines is unreliable isn't it? Either that or there were some problems with it.

The wireless solution would neatly nip telkom's infrastructure in the bud... especially if they can make it fast and reliable.

I love the idea of a Telkom funeral! Hell, I might even fly up to JHB just to be there... :)
