Telkom now roaming on Vodacom...

You sure that's on Vodacom and not mtn? I've just tried to select Vodacom and it says network registration failed.

Have set my carrier selection to manual and hard set to Telkom.
Also with the Vodacom roaming its supposed to be seamless and will still say Telkom but it looks like it will be Telkom-R not like the MTN roaming agreement which said MTN 3G.

Guys first of all it won't show roaming at all. The Vodacom towers will broadcast the Telkom network ID so it will be as if you are always on Telkom. You won't even know you are on Vodacom. If it shows R then it's probably still MTN roaming.

Damn so once telkom cancels mtn there won't be a way to force roam?

Possibly by forcing Vodacom's band on the phone but needs testing to confirm once the coverage is more widespread.

We have awesome members here who will figure it out am sure .

Nope. It would be like suddenly Telkom has coverage all over even in rural areas. It will ALWAYS show Telkom and you won't be able to select any other network from a network search.

Vodacom is currently doing it with Rain.

The only way to know if you are roaming is having 2 devices next to each other. 1 with Telkom sim and 1 with Vodacom sim and compare Cell ID to see if they match. If they do you know you are roaming on a Vodacom tower.

For me currently at my flat my Vodacom contract is permanently on the Rain tower. I check the Cell id on my S8 with my Vodacom simcard in and it matches with my Huawei B618 with my Rain mobile sim in. So i know Vodacom is roaming on Rain.

As @Yuu mentioned to test Telkom roaming on Rain you can force LTE band 1 and LTE Band 8. Those are two bands that Vodacom uses for LTE that Telkom does not. If you get signal after forcing one of those to bands on Telkom you know you are roaming on the Vodacom network.

I hear you but I am getting LTE in areas where I didn’t.
Anyway...something different, something exciting.

Also noticed it today...
TelkomSA-R
Still the same crappy coverage and garbling of calls when roaming on EMPTY-N
Will try Vodacom Roaming shortly

Well if thats the case then Telkom might be adding the R to the network name to indicate that it's roaming but the phone would still always show it as the home network. It would never show on the phone that it's roaming.

With MTN roaming agreement Telkom customers actually connect to the MTN network name as visitor hence the phone clearly shows roaming and if data roaming is off then data will be disabled.

With the new deal whether the data roaming is on or off it should not matter when roaming on Vodacom.

Absolutely agree with you. :-)

I tried everything but can not see any Vodacom roaming. It's not in affect yet or only in certain areas.

One way to know for sure you on Vodacom is LTE , MTN only offers 3G roaming

Yes but testing in a area that you knpw Telkom does not have coverage. As my tests showed Telkom started refarming 3g spectrum and rolled out lte on band 1.

Basically the only way now would be to force LTE band 8 and check if you ever get coverage. Then you know ypu are roaming on Vodacom.

But if it's not showing roaming you wouldn't know I guess. It could just seem you on the telkom network.

I switched from manual ( MTN ) to automatic network selection.

Phone remained on MTN. I fairy sure the Vodacom roaming is being rolled out in stages

Yep. Was a one day occurrence. The R disappeared yesterday and signal went back to rubbish.
Also had the R displayed on 2 iPhones but another one didn’t have it. All next to each other.
Looks like it was all testing.

Saw the same Telkom-R on my kid's phone while mine didn't - very off.
