Telkom Pay launched

Telkom has launched Telkom Pay, which is its digital wallet service that runs through WhatsApp.

Telkom Pay allows customers to send money to anyone with a cellphone number and can be accessed without any other app or software.

How many of these services are viable? Everyone has their own version of this with an ever growing list

It really should be free for individuals for life. WhatsApp parent Facebook will get a gold mine in the form of (indirect) meta data: They will be able to guess more accurately which adds work and which doesn't

Whatsapp is more expensive than USSD and SMS (if you do bulk which they will then it's cheaper than SMS still not cheaper than USSD, no way Telkom will foot the bill so curious what their business model is)

Near everyone is probably reselling the same handful of people's services.

It won't be cheaper than SMS I think, just due to the high base cost on Whatsapp. All depends on number of replies etc.

For message transfer should be one to say whom to, one for amount and one confirm, that doubled to 6 for replies would probably make Ussd and sms pretty close if not high enough bulk (in the thousands of customers a month) with ussd winning on higher.

I doubt Whatsapp to break even with sms before the tens of thousands of customers at least due to the high bulk price and never vs ussd. Rcs will completely dominate both.

All depends on number of messages and users and then Whatsapp has stuff like verified account, but ussd the number would be unique/large player so fraud should be low enough.
