Telkom plans to split its business functions

Telecoms company Telkom plans to separate its business along clearer lines into retail, wholesale and enterprise focus areas in the coming months and years.
More likely the coming years, given the pace at which they operate...

Ta, MickeyD. I'm curious as to how far the split goes. Separate operating units (a la divisions) with perhaps central corporate services like BCX? Or corporatised subsidiaries reporting separate results (revenues and expenses), each owning its own letterhead and headcount?

It's already recognized and functionally split per the CC recommendations but they want to go all the way.

they also appear to have marked certain assets as disposable - Tudon for example
quite curious as to what is happening with Swiftnet

not quite sure by what is meant by "split into 3" but my guess is:
mobile (essentially a "retail" business as MTN RAN agreement)
retail (all non-mobile retail stuff including TI)
wholesale

Pardon my ignorance but what about Switfnet? I thought that was the protocol banks used, is it run by Telkom locally?

Those models were all developed by a very learned task team during Telkom "Renaissance Project". It was headed by Dr Andrew Barendse and pre-empted the CC outcome, which is why Telkom were able to quickly adapt when the ruling was handed down.

Currently Telkom is structured into different divisions that already splits Wholesale, Retail, Corporate Services, etc. and inhouse there is extensive separate reporting.

Financial system wise they can easily adopt total separation.

I would imagine that accommodation wise they are taking a separation into account with their move from the Telkom Towers in Pretoria to their premises in Centurion.

I would like to see autonomous entities (subsidiaries) reporting to a holding company, albeit a single legal entity.

Swiftnet is (or was or whatnot) a product of Fastnet (search Swiftnet and see what tops the list)
FastNet is a wholly owned subsidiary of Telkom SA SOC Limited

SWIFT is an interbanking service

My interest in Fastnet is that they very much have their own ECS and ECN licences (independently of Telkom) and in the vain of the Neotel acquisition are a precedent of one network operator owning another as a going concern.

As far as I know Fastnet actually utilize network services on a wholesale basis from the MNOs other than Telkom Mobile which is somewhat amusing

No, they won't have mobile as a separate unit...
- Wholesale
- Retail
- Enterprise

Ah right forgot about Enterprise
- which might also be the unit responsible for SA Connect (with Telkom as the "preferred" provider)

indeed but thats not particularly high growth compared to some other ISPs ...
and don't let anti-ganda know ...

I do strongly believe that TI as its own unit is the way forward
But, dear Sir, what are the subscriber numbers?

/will have to wait for their full AFS for that.

DSL lines = 1 005 286
TI subs = 574 761

TI has 57% of the fixed line ISP market??
