Telkom POTS Modem

Ok, i didnt know SA had DSL at that time and there is no dial up subsection on the forum.
Aah gather round kids, let uncle K tell you a story. Many many moons ago, when Windows XP was hot off the press, 56k modems hogged phone lines for entire weekends courtesy of the R7 Weekend special, Google was so new only the kids used it, Telkom unleashed onto an unsuspecting public a new way of connecting to the internet: ADSL. It came with a mind-boggling 256kbit/s download speed, 64kbit/s upload, and a whole 3GB of data. Life was great, if you could afford it.

But the internet was becoming popular very quickly, Real Media wanted to stream horribly compressed audio and video to your eyeballs, this new peer2peer filesharing was the hip cool new thing everyone was into, every day there was a bunch of funny pictures and videos in your inbox (email!) to forward to your friends, and oh yes, there was internet porn. And soon enough 3GB was not enough, and your international connections would be throttled before the end of the month. People got unhappy, and started complaining.

It is rumoured some people also useful and productive things on the internet. Work, or business even. One Rudolph Muller, known around these parts simply as "rpm", was one such individual. Allegedly, we don't judge. Rudolph was not content with just complaining. Rudolph was thinking bigger. He was a an organiser, an inspiration, a force multiplier. He founded "MyADSL" - a forum where people can complain collectively. And importantly, it was hosted locally, so people who hit their 3GB cap could still use it. MyADSL became popular pretty quickly. Soon other forums were added. More people showed up. And as more broadband options became available (remember Sentech, iBurst and early 3G), forums for those were added. Pretty soon it was obvious that ADSL wasn't a fitting name any longer, and thus was renamed to MyBroadband. And here we are!
