Telkom rates come under fire

South African telephone subscribers, enraged by high rates charged by fixed-line provider Telkom, are turning on the government and on the company which has near-monopoly status.

Analysts attack Telkom regularly, complaining of high charges especially for access to the Internet, and warn that this could obstruct South Africa, which has the biggest economy in Africa,
from achieving targeted annual growth of six percent from 2010.

A study by the Business Leadership group on 15 countries said ADSL costs in South Africa were 139 percent higher than the average rate in the nations surveyed. It said local calls at peak hours were 199 percent more expensive.

Charley Lewis, telecommunications technology specialist at Johannesburg's Witswatersrand University's LINK centre, said that "pricing and services in telecommunications in South Africa" were "very much an issue.

"It is also an interesting sign of the advanced level of consumer activism in South Africa ... quite unusual compared to other African countries."

Money well spent

Considering all the good press we've gotten out of the TAG ad (funny how important good copy is, the Morocco comparison seems to have hit a nerve) I'd say my 200 bucks was well spent.

Amazing how much awareness an ad creates hey.
Well done to TAG, look forward to contributing to the next advert with a smile.
:)

Yeah but we are saying the same thing over and over, when will something be done about it, but the government or anyone.

Well done to TAG. We need to keep it up now. I'm willing to toss in the same amount as and when needed in order to see results. Now that the effect beyond the ad has been seen, and TAG has established some credibility, I'll bet that plenty of others will as well.

:)

Yeah but we are saying the same thing over and over, when will something be done about it, but the government or anyone.

We've been seeing a heck of a lot more publicity around the issue in the last few months. Hopefully someone will start feeling the pressure.

Edit: Papi quite obviously is, and that's a good start.

Looks like TAG has been a major success, far more than people expected I think!

Success or not-

Do you honestly think the govt will actually do something. Not a chance... Lots of noise, no action. You cannot force people in power to do something against their will.

I hear in certain circles, certain things are being done.... whether or not, it will bear success is another matter all together.

Another thread, another ad and zero change in the rates.

Until Icasa grows some balls so to speak, please join the queue, loosen your belt and when instructed bend over.

Big business runs our government, not voters. Forget the idea that the voters will influence change, never happen, not an issue like this. The driver is business, get them on our side and pressure will mount.

When you take into account business citing high telecoms prices as a key reason why they do not invest further (or anything) in SA, believe me that must create pressure.
Telecoms prices in this country is a hot topic and we can all do our bit to keep it that way, until there is noticeable reform.

We all do what we can to build that pressure then sooner or later something has to give.
