Telkom reveals 20Mbps, 40Mbps VDSL pricing

On the business ADSL side, the Telkom 40mbps VDSL uncapped is cheap, when compared to MWEB's pricing:

Telkom TBiz Elite Uncapped Business 40960 Sophisticated Web-Hosting R 5095 (I think you have to purchase router seperately)

MWEB Business Uncapped 40mbps R10,699 p/m (VDSL router included)

Ouch... so MWEB is double the price!

So we'll wait until 4Mbps becomes the new entry level at a couple of hundred a month.

I think some perspective is needed here , its early days and like with the previous launch of ADSL the pricing was crazy , I remember paying something like R500 for a 192k like with 1 Gb of data. I am sure the pricing will come down and quick. Times have changed and Telkom has recently shown a greater respect for their consumers pockets.

For me the glass is half full

Ok, lets be fair. You currently pay around R1000 for 4meg/10meg uncapped with line rental etc So R2000 for 20meg sounds about in line with current pricing.

Not saying current pricing is good though.

more like R400 @afrihost as part of 4meg uncapped bundle...only reason i haven't left them already with the line as bad as it it now

They said the undersea cables would help bring prices down,but this?That's like 216GBP and don't they pay somewhere between 30-40GBP for these speeds and data over there?How is this justifiable?We've gone back by light speeds if you ask me,we will never catch up technologically with the rest of the world. Thanx Telkom.

Strange when telkom announced a price reduction on their uncapped products mweb introduced a throttled product, probably knowing telkom would soft cap theirs.

Today mweb and telkom again revealing their pricing for vdsl.

Btw what happend to mweb freeing the internet, i feel since Rudy left something is just missing at mweb he was more passionate about freeing the internet than what mweb is. Really miss the guy.

I remember an article a couple of years back where BT were upgrading their existing customers from 4 to 20MBps at no extra charge, when will telkom ever learn...sigh

Unless we are on Jupiter,the moon or something,it's hard to justify such charges when BT and probably others could do it free of charge.We need serious industrial espionage to get to the bottom of these pricing "scandals",until then I'm afraid the internet in this country will never be free.

soooo on the 20Mbps softcap, how much can you get before they cut you off and how badly would they throttle you?

All of this is academic when the exchange is either "congested" or not capable of the promised speeds.

Sunninghill is maxed at 4mbps and I am told that there are "no plans to upgrade anytime soon, even to 10mbps".

Why don't you check the "Usage" column in the table?

Looking at the voice deals, it does not seem to bad.
20Mbps with 30GB, line rental and closer package 2 which includes free after hour calls for only R899. Save R10 compared to a 30GB account with 4Mbps connectivity.

I currently pay
R299 = 30 GB (openweb)
R185 = Closer 2 (line rental & after hours)
R425 = 10Mbps line rental

still wondering how much can download with uncapped and upload on these accounts... i see neotel is 15mbps uncapped is 2250GB for 15mbps then throttled to 7.5mbps till 4500GB...

if they can allow about 4000GB that'll be good :) and affordable for most bussiness'

Anyone who has anything good to say about this simply has forgotten that they have a huge proboscis stuffed in their bottom direct from the ANC, and have just grown to live with it.
If this country had wholesome competition, these line speeds would be an upgrade as a matter-of-course and prices would be exponentially lower.
I know it might hurt to try and bend up straight again, but that's really what you should do
