Hi my IT educated friends

After much deliberation I decided to go for telkom DSL account and took the telkom modem as well(I just knew I should have bought it cash, but didn't and took a 24 month contract)

Now they told me the account is R299-00 per month with 3 gig international cap and the 30 gig local.
But my account is at least R650-00 per month. Keep in mind that I do not use the phone for calls.

Any ideas of downing the montly price or getting me out of the contract?

I WOULD APPREACIATE ANY COMMENTS.

Your monthly price shoudn't be that high. Phone sales and ask the price for the deal you took. It might just be a error in thier system.

Phone sales? What a silly idea, clearly we would know more about the situation than the very company that provided the service to him.

Wait, what?

I tried going to the tygervalley branch where I originally applied and the women who sold it to me said "I DO NOT WORK WITH ACCOUNTS". So yes I suppose that I need to battle some moreith them...

Be happy that you at least have some service. I've been in my new house 2 weeks and still no phone line, let alone dsl. I've had to ask them about 4 times before my request even registered on their system!

If you took the free modem, then you are locked into a 24 month contract with Telkom, but for the ADSL line rental only. The ISP portion / data bundle is provided by Telkom Internet, a seperate entity altogether. This bit is not subject to the 24 month contract. So you can cancel the ISP portion / data-bundle / Telkom Internet account, and just pay for your ADSL line rental. You can then switch to any other ISP for your data - Afrihost, WebAfrica, MWEB, etc.

This is how it has worked for several of our business clients. I'm not sure what the contractual obligations are if you took one of the DO Broadband / Do Broadband Closer packages.

Telkom does not have a 3GB @ R299 account .... this thread lacks info.

Remember that line rental is R133.30
ADSL rental can be R152 / R326 / R413
The DO Bundles go for R199 / R258 / R554

Edit:
The DO3 R554 is the only one that gives you 30Gb local, or the All Access ADV 9GB account...

Call 10219 and tell them that you want to switch to detailed billing

Detailed billing should be reflected within the first invoice - from this, 'varknek' should be able to see that the TelkomInternet (i.e. 3GB) part of the account has been charged for twice. Therefore, if signed up in OCT., then they charge for OCT & NOV on the first invoice.

Don't know why, as this just creates more work for them at the end of the day - if 'varknek' is in fact able to opt out of the Internet part of his contract (as per the one post), then if he doesn't use any of the NOVEMBER data, he can request a refund.

I've done it twice before (not on contract through Telkom, though): First when downgrading from 3GB to 1GB, and then cancelling the 1GB, I was able to rqst. credit for the last month charged for, but not used, each time & they sorted it out, no problem.

My advice is to wait for that first a/c, then go to a Telkom Direct shop where he can lodge the rqst., and get a ref. no. at the same time, or do so via 10210 / 10215.

No need to try cancelling the line / ADSL rental.

thanx to the tread that icubed placed. I did contact THEM this morning and apparently the contract is with TelkomSA and not Telkom Internet. So if I cancel everything accept the line the contract still runs out it time and I can use another ISP. Definitely a cheaper one. So thanx to you boffins this story would probably have a happy ending .... if THEY do what THEY said. So now I need to find another ISP....

Awesome! You're welcome. Let us know if this actually works.
