So I have had 4mbit since around the time they released it. Recently my connection has been dropping A LOT, now my router seems to stay syncd but the connection drops. Telkom say i must drop my line speed to sort out the issue, but i am not to keen to drop my line speed. Any input ?

Here is what my router has to say (telkom one):

Showtime Firmware Version: 3.30
Line State: SHOWTIME
Modulation: G.dmt
Annex Mode: ANNEX_A
Startup Attempts: 261
Max Tx Power: -38 dBm/Hz
CO Vendor: TEXAS_INSTRUMENTS
Elaspsed Time: 4 days 1 hours 15 minutes 43 seconds
Downstream
Upstream
SNR Margin 18.9 12.0 dB
Line Attenuation 30.7 15.5 dB
Errored Seconds 60420 447
Loss of Signal 260 260
Loss of Frame 3 0
CRC Errors 124 0
Data Rate 4096 640 kbps
Latency FAST FAST

Any of the guys that know a thing about SNR wanna tell me if i should really have them drop my line speed? Also could it be an issue on my ISP's end ? I have an IS uncapped Express account.

EDIT: Called my ISP, they say I should just call telkom and get my line reset. Gonna try that first.

They are talking rubbish...your line figures are good.

There MUST be a problem on your line..

Have u removed EACH and EVERY device (filters/faxes/phones) from your line with ONLY the modem plugged in?

Try alternative RJ11 cables?

Also check alternative entry points into the home?

Do you have an alarm connected to your line?

ALL of these things can play a MASSIVE role.

Also you can borrow a friendz router.

Thanks for letting me know they are full of ****. Spoke to my ISP they said its a line issue, ask them to reset the line and if not log a fault. Told me no need to drop my speed either. Removed all devices, still issues. Tried different cables and my cousins router already. No alarms on my line... Alternative entry points is an idea, means quite a mission since my router is not wireless and the other entry point is in the kitchen, but maybe worth a shot on the weekend. The point where it is now is a double, tried both of those, new cables everything i could possibly think off, cos i HATE dealing with telkom. Logged a fault 3 weeks ago, call them and they said it was resolved. No-one did anything but iy was resolved. Dialed them before MrNutz posted, and they said 8 minutes... Been close to 10 already... i guess i will wait another 20 or so b4 hearing from anyone.

Ok so 20 minutes later i get told they don't do port resets anymore... wtf??? Logged a fault... they need to come check the line. What a waste of time.

Something about it breaking the DSLAMS. Both people i spoke to said they can drop my line speed for me, seems to be the new thing they are telling customers. Logged a fault cos she said she can see the disconnects on her side, so there is an issue with the line... i dunno, they must just fix it!!

EDIT: Line dropped again, this time i notice the router dropped sync for like a second or so and then resyncd. I really hope they can just fix it!

They definitely talking crap, your SNR is a bit low, and your LA is high, but both are in "average" range and should support 4mbps easy.

A friend of mine's line kept dropping as well, turned out to be a loose connection on Telkom's side (in those blue/green boxes) and it only took them 2 years to fix it after multiple calls and faults being logged. Keep at it. Keep phoning.

unplug your modem from the line phone telkom en tell them your line does not want to sync then they will reset the port, when they ask if every thing is pluged in you just say yes. that might work...

I had a problem like this a while back.
My line had supported 4mb for like 6 months just fine, then the line just started dropping constantly. Telkom of course said that my line couldn't support it anymore and they would have to drop the speed.
I wasn't happy with it, they eventually sent a techy out to have a look, was a really nice guy, he even told me they talking BS, they just plain lazy.

The problem ended up being a 'corroded box' on the telephone pole outside my house which he replaced. No problems since :)

Had a very similar problem about a year back with very similar responses from Telkom. After logging faults with them about 5 times a day for a month, they eventually sent someone out. Took the techie all of 2 minutes to see the telephone line had been seriously damaged. 5 minutes later, back up and running.

Keep on their case!

So the techie came out and my brother was at home. He called me, I explained my problem to the techine and he said it shouldn't be a problem. He closed the fault as fixed but line is STILL dropping. Do i have to get them to re-open the fault ?

Tried to relog fault online. Go to: https://secureapp.telkom.co.za/assurance/public/troubleshooter and get the following.
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Oracle-Application-Server-10g/10.1.2.0.2 Oracle-HTTP-Server Server at secureapp.telkom.co.za Port 443

Very nice telkom, you stupid idi0ts.

OMG! Wiating for them to answer is seriously frustrating...been 10 minutes now.

Was reading this thread while waiting on the line. I also upgraded to 4mb line and since then it drops continuosly. Am busy calling to ask them to take me back to 512 but it sounds as if I should rather get them to send a techie out here to test the line first.

Would u agree?

Are your margins constant or do you notice them jumping quiet a bit? A few weeks ago that was happening to me, margins would jump like crazy. I called them the Thursday they tell me it will be looked at on the Saturday i get an sms saying its resolved. My line doesn't even sync at all now. Frustrated i call them asking to speak to there supervisor, that didn't help at all. The Sunday i call them and tell them my line is dropping constantly and they need to check it out.

They do a test and can see a fault on my line. So i phone them on Monday they tell me no they have found a fault near to the exchange and its causing breaks with alot of people, they then proceed to tell me that there is a backlog of faults so it would only be dealt with the following Thursday.

I am frustrated and upset i just leave it later that evening i get home and my line is working 100% i ask them what they did they said sir we still need to send out a technician. that Wednesday i get a call from the tech they at my house to test it.

I stay about 2.5KM from the exchange i too had a perfectly syncing profile at 4096 until i just couldn't anymore so now i am 2048 :/

Ok so line was disconnecting EVERY 5 MINUTES. Dropped line speed and logged fault. Going to log fault every time they fix the fault till i have working 4mbit. If they cant provide the service they used to a year ago (when they should be providing better service) i will cost them as much as i can!!!!

Line is more stable, here are stats from my router.

Downstream
Upstream
SNR Margin 37.6 12.0 dB
Line Attenuation 28.6 14.0 dB
Errored Seconds 0 0
Loss of Signal 0 0
Loss of Frame 0 0
CRC Errors 0 0
Data Rate 1024 512 kbps
Latency FAST FAST

SNR has more than doubled... why ?

I have just finished fighting with Telkom on exactly the same problem.
They also advised that I must drop the line speed and I said no.

I explained that there is clearly noise on the line, and that means that there is a corroded/loose connection somewhere.
The techie took 3 attempts to fix it (after 3 days of waiting for action - he finally decided to fix it on Sunday - probably gets good overtime pay on Sundays or something)

Anywayz, I could clearly hear the like making noizes, and, of course, a millisecond later (after the noise), my connection could drop.

I listened to the line as follows:
1 - Get a good phone with speakerphone technology.
2 - Turn the speaker volume up.
3 - Plug the phone in on the line all by itself, no ADSL, no filters, nothing but the phone.
4 - Take the phone off-hook, the dial-tone will sound.
5 - Wait 20 seconds for the dial tone to give up.
6 - Wait 15 seconds for the dooop dooop dooop doop tones to give up.
7 - Now you can hear the line. If it crackles, tell telkom to fix it.

I forced the techie stand there listening with me for 10 minutes of crystal clear line before I signed off on the fault.
My line is awesome now. He fixed a bad connection in 3 places; DSLAM, phone pole point and some other connector somewhere.

Getting another techie sent out. Will leave work this time and come home and sit and make sure he gets it done. Just called, some dude there told me to step it back up to 4mbit if it is still dropping and if i am still hearing cracking, so i stepped it back up to 4mbit. Just have to wait for the techie i guess.
