Telkom services discontinued: WiMax, DECT, some copper

If they can't replace my Telkom Wimax with atleast ADSL then I'm not interested, time to find another Wimax provider or perhaps try LTE.

Latency is a big factor for me, I get 40-50ms ping constantly with their Wimax solution, with the freedom of choosing an Uncapped ISP (Mweb) but now they forcing me into a high latency 3G type network with no freedom to choose an ISP of my choice. I've given up on ADSL as it's been over 3 years, and I'm still waiting.
 
Wonder how many wimax subscribers they had & if they ever recouped their infrastructure investment.

WiMax is/was an awesome underrated ADSL alternative. It's a pity it was never really marketed.

This might interest you http://www.techcentral.co.za/lte-shoot-out-mtn-wins-again/42767/ Telkom pings looking good there. Coverage is another story though, you might fall just short of from those initial testing areas I saw in Sandton.

As for other wimax providers I doubt there are many, recall iBurst/Vodacom WiMax, Screamer Telecoms, Neotel but whether those still offer a service is another thing.

Wimax was a real ADSL replacement.
 
I use to have wimax and it worked like a charm. Still got all the equipment sitting at home but there is no use for it. Telkom only offered 512 wimax never anything higher
 
Try opening a garage in the Kalahari and tell us how much money you have made after three (3) years.
 
I think the death of WiMax is an unfortunate symptom of our general ECN sector in SA. WiMax is currently a great alternative to copper for the last mile and if providers wanted to invest in the last mile without building a copper network WiMax was a way to go, but it should be "unbundled" in that no only should ISPs have been able to use Telkom's WiMax but ISPs (including Telkom's ISP) should have have been able to use whoever's WiMax last mile on a reasonable and non-discriminatory basis. Of course this did not happen and for Telkom it really is an install where costs makes sense situation.
Add in the spectrum licencing fees - and the changes - and WiMax makes less sense from a costs point of view.

And finally LTE as it is progressing is by several accounts surpassing WiMax and will be a better alternative for the last mile.
