Telkom slams price critics

Line installations do, generally, run at a loss. I think it costs Telkom an average of over R1200 to install a line.
The line installation might run at a loss but they make that up in two years just from the basic line rental. They make it back in under 6 months when you add ADSL line rental as well.

And of course I'm not even adding the ridiculous prices we are charged for calls.

If it's suppose to be a price rebalancing then it should be reported so. The fact that only 3% of the market has ADSL, a 24% (lets just use their numbers) translates to about a drop in total revenue of 0.72%. While the 8% increase in line rentals means a full 8% increase. 8% - 0.72% = 7.28% increase in revenue. This is a really rough calculation and definitely not accurate, but I think it can illustrate the point. How's that for Chinese Mathematics?

Hm..not sure anybody still reads this thread. But I complained to Telkom about Steven Hayward's comments and I got a email reply back apologising for the comment. I was pretty satisfied as far as apology goes.

Origin248, would you be so kind as to post the emailied apology here? Something so rare and valuable like an apology from Telkom deserves to be shared amoungst all South Africans, so stop hogging it to yourself already! :D

(Seriously, please post it if you would be so kind).

Omw I'm so not believing you.[sarcastic] We are always wrong and telkom is always telling the truth and are always right[/sarcastic]

First bit of this customer centric stuff that I have seen from Telkom.
Good for you Origin248 and well done to Telkom for making the effort.
Its refreshing indeed.

Lol

"But, he said this was all part of the ongoing tariff rebalancing that had seen Telkom place a lot of emphasis on reducing the cost of long distance and international calls, and increasing the cost of the line rental, the latter being a service which it runs at a loss. "

How can it possibly run at a loss they are using telephone lines that where given to Telkom years ago by the Government and i have not once seen them upgrade a single line or even replace one, they just patch it at wait till it breaks again. This country is a joke and it is not just our internet and phone prices look at electronics and cars for example.
