Telkom slams price critics

his comes after broadband activist, myadsl.co.za founder Rudolph Muller said on Monday that the effective decrease in ADSL pricing was closer to 12% than the 24% that Telkom claims.

Muller reached this conclusion after factoring in the decline in the ADSL access portion, but including the increases in installation and line rental.

Managing executive for retail marketing at Telkom Steven Hayward said it was not accurate to bundle these together; this was a case of "Chinese maths".

Haha rpm: Chinese maths! LOL, where do they come up with this carp?

More carp:
Regarding the third cost element; the actual bandwidth that a customer must buy from a service provider (Telkom or any other), Hayward said there was a lot of competition in this space.

Reading the whole article just infuriates me. I feel like writing ANOTHER letter to ICASA - not sure what good that would do though considering the sleeping CEO.

Oh well, just have to wait for my visa paperwork to be sorted out now I guess. Seems to be the only viable option in this country.

And Telkom had also introduced a wholesale pricing rate of R54 per Gig to the service provider to enable them to offer customers a more friendly, and flexible pricing package.

"We have provided the market with real options," he said, adding that it was unreasonable not to factor considerations like this into a review of overall pricing.

Regarding Telkom's international competitiveness on ADSL pricing, Hayward said it was getting closer to international norms and had come a long way towards achieving that.

What?! This is all a load of bollocks. Laughable, telkom, laughable.

What a total load of ar$e.

Telkom should stop with their Telskum maths, the chinese did a lot to improve maths and trig calculations.

If I were Chinese I'd take that as an insult and look for a way to sue the bastard! That's kind of a derogatory statement to make

Hayward used the example of the DSL 192 package, where Telkom had doubled the speed available to these customers, with a small price decrease. Customers would see more moves like this, as well as additional bundled packages, he said.
This is sad, is he saying rather than reduce the bottom line cost they'd simply add on extra services/speed you may or may not want and claim its cheaper?

Edit I love his comparison idea.. so how is nz, aus, wait how are other countries in africa doing?

LOL I also saw that you know LAWTS of compitition.

is this meant to be an insult? Not only is it bordering on a racial slur (damn that - it IS a racial slur), but the Chinese have made HUGE contributions to mathematics, far more than any race of African descent, that is for sure.

OK, OK, lets not make this a racial thread again pulease

Just took a screenshot of the news24 website with this as the main story, at last Telskum seems to be getting the bad attention it needs.

At this stage it was difficult to benchmark South Africa against other international country examples given that it had not yet reached significant economies of scale, Hayward said.

Although with roughly 150 000 ADSL customers now, it was achieving some economies of scale, this would be much more so once it reached its target of more than a million customers in the next few years.
Unless Telkom does something to make entry-level ADSL more affordable they will never achieve their target to achieve "significant economies of scale".

rofl and there goes news24.. can't access it anymore.

Uh. I'd take it as a compliment. Chinese Maths is in fact exceptionally good. They invented the abacus thousands of years before the west even considered counting a good idea :p
EDIT: Nice one bwana :D

What a friggin re***d!!

I think we need to stop listening to the actors and kick the *** of whoever is writing the script. And a big rotten tomato to fin24 as well. That's not a report, that's just publication of Telkom PR.

Could everyone on the forum who only uses the ADSL line rental portion (Doesn't have a landline, doesn't pay ISP costs and doesn't download anything) please raise their hands...

Anyone?

Thought so.

When I look at something, I look at what it costs me in total...

except with a twist - this Steve has decided to make some racist slur against Chinese people - I think Chinese people are quite good at mathematics

me votes IC for president! Thank you very much. Some people on this forum are getting my respect bigtime

As soon as I can get on to New24's site to copy the article I'll be sending a complaint to telkom about their xenophobic spokesperson.

Rofl, I bet all the Chinese investors wil be chuffed at being singled out for their math skillz. AFAIK Mr Mbeki has been cultivating a relationship with the Chinese even going sofar as to not meet that Lama dude.
