Telkom slams price critics

With regard to the ADSL access portion, Hayward said prices had come down significantly in the past two years. He used the example of the most popular package, the DSL 512 offering, which has gone from R680 to R362 in the past 18 months.
Excuse me... but where is the proof? On their website it still is advertised as

Business & HomeDSL 512 --- R477.00

So it is a difference of R477-R362=R115... so who's misleading whom now?

Somebody cache this page quick!

Telkom is asking for a fat lip, Telkom is...

Telkom's web page is factually correct: The prices only drop 1 August.

Telkom's brag squad is slow: The announced drop should have been indicated on the webpages already.

Gmmph

Regarding the third cost element; the actual bandwidth that a customer must buy from a service provider (Telkom or any other), Hayward said there was a lot of competition in this space.

Where!?!? Did I miss anything?

No bounce - seems to be a valid email address. :D

Time to send in those comments. :D
Some spam filters are set to drop incoming mail for non-existent mailboxes without notification, so you can send a ton of mail to this mail address and yet nothing will come of it as the spam filter will quietly reroute it to /dev/null

I know because my spam filter is set up to do exactly this thing, to stop directory harvesting attacks.

Rather reroute *that* company to /dev/null instead... :D

Oh, and one last thing : we pay your salaries and wages, so therefore we, the consumer, have FULL right to complain about shoddy or poor service, so shut up and DROP THOSE PRICES!

Feh...

Maths 101 :

The more people you have on your network, the less you can charge them to maintain the same level of profit, thereby dropping your prices, thereby getting more customers because of your lower prices.

Wrong maths :

Charging high prices, losing more customers, "adjusting" your prices, making everybody believe that your prices have dropped, losing more customers because of high pricing and lies, "adjusting" your pricing once more upwards, losing even more customers...

Remember, the most powerful, "feeling-good" advertisement does not have a chance against the power of "word-of-mouth"... people will believe anything their friends will tell them, even if the advertisement says otherwise...

So, yes, I am looking forward to see a lot of squirming being done.

Pass the popcorn and Coke, please... this is gonna be interesting... :D

Light at the end of the tunnel

Hey guys, look at it this way:

Taking into account some recent calculations on how overpriced Telkom Broadband is compared to the rest of the world, it will only take another 83.333365777 odd years to bring SA in line with the rest of the world at the current price reduction rate!

If you squint really hard you can see the light at the end of the tunnel... :p

IMO some of that is covered in [thread=45194]this existing forum survey...[/thread]

As for releasing poll or survey results to the media, I would rather the media decided on their own whether or not to use the results of a MyADSL Forum survey - we don't want to be accused of releasing the equivallent of Telkodemonopolies' Markinor surveys - rather let the media analyse the survey(s) themselves, and draw their own conclusions...

Telkom is wrong and we are right. Simple as that.

At this stage it was difficult to benchmark South Africa against other international country examples given that it had not yet reached significant economies of scale, Hayward said. Although with roughly 150 000 ADSL customers now, it was achieving some economies of scale,

Mauritius, Kenya? They have MORE subscribers and it costs less than half it does here.

Tired of the same damn lies.

Hayward said the different offerings needed to be viewed separately given that most Telkom customers use their line primarily for voice calls. The decision to install an ADSL line was a separate consideration, and only 3% of its customers had ADSL, Hayward said.

So prices were in fact only dropped for 3% of its customers and increased for 97% of its customers. Nice bit of Telkom mathematics to screw over the customer (and increase profit!). And they had the nerve to take out double page advertisements to proclaim their price 'reductions'!

ic, I think u misunderstood VJB.

He's saying that the only ppl who actually experience a price decrease are ADSL users, and we only constitute 3% of Telkom's customers. So the vast majority of their customers are experiencing price increases. (The line rental)

What I'm getting at is that the average Telkom customer is gonna end up paying more 'cos their line rental is slightly more and their local call rates are unchanged.

Check my new signiture

Hi all, I decided to change my signiture in support of Rudolf Muller.

Price Critics Shame Telkom

Wayward Hayward is right about the US, we cannot compare them, they have competition... Not Puppets and Muppets shooting fish in a barrel.

The USA like Canada and New Zealand only pay $20 a month for un-metered local calls (in their respective currencies - ie in New Zealand you pay 20 New Zealand Dollars a month)

Which brings me to my next point which is the statement that Line rental runs at a loss, is complete and utter tosh. I am so glad he did make that statement because now they can be nailed with it at ICASA

But the part that I find the most funny is that Telkom are giving price reductions on a service that ICASA has told them to scrap because it should not be there in the first place - And then regarding the different ADSL Speeds, what is the point of having the fastest car when you only have three litres of fuel, again another thing that ICASA have told Telkom to sort out

Nice post and nicely said DL.

He disputes Muller's allegation that SA would need to cut ADSL costs by up to 70% in order to be acceptable by international standards, but concedes there's probably room for further reductions, and says there will be additional efforts to increase the value to the customer.

Hayward used the example of the DSL 192 package, where Telkom had doubled the speed available to these customers, with a small price decrease. Customers would see more moves like this, as well as additional bundled packages, he said.

I don't want 'increased value' **** you very much. I want my 192k ADSL with a 24% discount. I am so enraged by this article I can go out and ram Telkom trucks with my car.

More translations can be done over here.

This a sad day indeed. :(
:D you shouldn't use Babelfish,it's not going give you the best translation

But, he said this was all part of the ongoing tariff rebalancing that had seen Telkom place a lot of emphasis on reducing the cost of long distance and international calls, and increasing the cost of the line rental, the latter being a service which it runs at a loss..

Run at a loss? really? They lie straight faced. Can't they be sued for false misleading advertising?
