Telkom 'still in control'

Thats why telkom said "Welcome SNO! - we look forward" and in the dungeons there is a Bwhaaaahaaahaaaaahaaaaaaa dracula type laugh as they suck the blood out of SNO too

Cohen was however, of the view that the roll out of the new network would lead to lower tariffs "but not too quickly"

Exactly how quickly is too quickly Miss Cohen?

Sometimes I wish I had the power to take people like Miss Cohen or the MoC by the scruffs of their necks and force them to explain the tripe they sometimes come up with...

:(

Exactly What We Expected

What a bunch of mfene

Exactly what we expected. Fire the lot.

"Icasa councillor Tracy Cohen said on Friday although the SNO licence issued by the Independent Communications Authority entitled the new player - SNO Telecommunications - to compete with Telkom on the public switched telecommunications service (PSTS) front, the unbundling of the local loop has been delayed until further notice."

Those that thought ICASA was on the publics side... looks like were being done in again. What does this awarding of the license mean if we have to KEEP PAYING TELKOM FOR THE NEXT 2 YEARS for any local loop service.
It sucks big time!

Now Telkom has the SNO by the balls. Saying no to LLU immidiatly delays the SNO becoming operational by at least 6 months.

Telkom says thankyou for another 3 billion R profit in the kitty :)

What a letdown to all our high hopes. Telkom still rules! I think it is time for us to start a wireless mesh system. for instance, I connect the PC's in my house with a wireless networking system. I can't help it that my neighbour can access the system with his wireless system and he can't help it that I can access his system. A de facto wireless system can be up and running before anyone can sniff trouble and who can really be sued?

well they say 6 to 9 months.. thats almost 1 of 2 yrs gone. They 'could' if they were smart, supply + interconnect/link the metro networks, wifi netwrks etc and just work on their own national grid whilst still pulling in cash though not directly to consumer and before you know it, 2 yrs are over and they ready to roll out the last mile stuff.

In two years time ICASA and Doc will start talking about the last mile.
This should then take a further 18 months then Telkom will start with their crap and delay it another 18 months.

I don't expect anything for at least the next 5 years.

I thought this was about the SA consumer. I don't see how a man in the street is going to benefit out of this deal. I really thought next week I was going to cancel my domestic beige phone and apply for one with the new kid on the block. I don't own a company nor do I run an ISP, so I'm not going to benefit much from the leased line price drops (if ever). Well I do have DSL (starter-pack) connectivity (at least that's what Telkom led me to believe), I could either pull the plug on it and go with Tata -assuming they roll out a better service soon- OR I could cancel it completely and visit the internet cafe once in a while. Information age will hopefully hit South Africa one day, for now we are happy to be on the darker side of the planet!!

Fsck the lot of them... first a good low-level format, then a destructive format, then a long format... then format by spiky ball, then a format by heavy spiked lawn roller, then a dynamite format... grrrr....

Gah.. the moment I read about the local loop still in teklom's control for 2 years, then my hopes were dashed utterly. Two years... it is a LONG time, and who knows, at the end of that period we will still be stuck with 1024 ADSL (entry-level in 2 years' time) while the world passed us by with newer, faster technologies...

Us South Africans need to stand together and march up to show our displeasure with this ruling...

And who was the clever guy/girl who came up with the idea of this 2 year window period anyway? Persons such as these should be shunned like the pest itself. Words can't describe what I want to do to that person, so I shall not attempt to describe that here...

In handing over the 25-year PSTS licence, Icasa councillor and SNO committee chairperson Lumko Mtimde said the new player's obligations included the provision of internet connectivity to 2 500 rural public clinics and 2 500 to public schools or further education and training institutions over a period yet to be decided.

Wasn't this something TELKOM was supposed to do? Sounds like the "ball" has been passed to the SNO. Dam TELKOM and their gall!

Yeah

Let's see if the SNO outdoes Telkom - I mean - you remember the so called Telkom school discount scheme?

I bet there were PLENTY of conditions that this licence was handed over - the SNO probably had to agree to fulfil a few of Telkom's empty promises...
I don't see how they can lump this with the SNO who still have to set up shop when Telkom have been milking it for some time and then some... but then when you consider government's shares, the conflict of interest is glaring... you know... government don't want to use their funds for this kind of "rubbish".

Why the heck do we have to wait ANOTHER 2 years before the local loop is unbundled.
Someone is really benefiting from this big time. ;-) *wink wink nudge nudge *
