Quick question,

Telkom recently called to say our lines had been "upgraded to 10mb" and would we like to switch to their 10mb service to utilize it.

With mweb being scrooges and not upgrading I had been considering it, but wanted to make sure we could use 10mb. On my router I seem to be looking at a sync speed of 4mb exactly, but the availability shows:

How do I know if I'm capable of utilizing 10mb?

Call Telkom and ask them?

Hey Dave!

Usually, if you call support - they can check their systems for the speed at the exchange (therefore giving you the max speed).

Also - which router model do you have? If D-Link, you can go to stats (under status) and have a look at the "Max Attainable Rate" to give you a rough estimate with line quality, distance from exchange etc etc.

Finally, the best way to check, would be to upgrade to 10Mbps and see if it works :D If not, you can always downgrade back to 4 :)

Hmm alright i'll give it another bash. I actually did call Telkom to find out and was transferred around a few times between ADSL and services before they just dropped the call. I don't really trust them either, they seem to have gotten better but I'm still dubious at best when they provide information.

I have the negear DGN2200 at the moment.

I guess just testing is probably best bet, maybe I could get a trial account or something from another provider for 10mb service and see what I get and go from there

thanks for the help :)

Check your router to see what mode DSL you are getting G.DMT ETC. . G-DMT is normally the old DSLAMs and is limited to 4 meg.
Any other mode and you should be good to go , seeing as you are getting a full 4 meg.
It would also help to know what exchange you are on , some one may know what is available there .

The question is, what are you paying now? Are you paying the "new" 4Mbps pricing or are you still paying the old 4/10Mbps pricing. If it's the latter then just tell them to upgrade it as you won't be paying any more and you can worry about MWEB later.
