Hi;

Looking at the Afrihost packages, we decided to upgrade from our Telkom 1Mbps 5GB account with Telkom, to a 4Mbps 50GB unshaped account with Afrihost. So we contacted Telkom near the end of September and was told we have tp give 30 days notice, so we did. I was not aware that we would have to give notice, so I have already signed up with Afrihost. The assumption here was that since Afrihost advertises that I won't have to deal with Telkom, actually meant that I wouldn't have to deal with Telkom.

So comes end of October and I contact Afrihost to find out if they can move control of the DSL line to them. They answered that they couldn't because the line is still in contract with Telkom. Back to Telkom again and again, they state an agent contacted us and offered to upgrade our package from 1Mbps to 4Mbps, plus give us a 50GB cap for a little more than we are paying now, and that we accepted this offer ??? Now that is just plain a lie. They did call us, bet we rejectted the offer out of a matter of principle.

is So we wanted to cancel it again, spent hours (not kidding) making numerous calls to Telkom and sending numerous support requests to Afrihost to get this problem solved. Teelkom atually states they cannot help us, and Afrihost states they can do nothing until Telkom 0 releases the line.

This is truly turning out to be a mission impossible!!!!:mad::mad:

1. Is Telkom purposefully ignoring cancellation requests?
2. Should Afrihost clearly state in their advertising that Telkom IS INDEED my problem until I can get the line moved to them?
3. A combination of both?

Is anyone else experiencing this same problem? Any suggestions?

I am currently utilising the 50GB from Afrihost, but still stuck on a 1Mbps line from Telkom, and I am beyond frustrated. My last service call to Afrihost was made online yesterday at 12h12, no response...???

I thought if you paid people for services, that you would actually receive service. Guess it's part of the price of living in Africa... :(

I just called telkom cancelled data contract with them but told them to keep my DSL line active and not terminate it as it will be taken over by another ISP. Phoned Afrihost, told em I wanna join they should take over my line from telkom. Took about 8 working days and all was fine.

You probably tied into a 24 month CONTRACT with telkom, hence the reason why you can't simpl switch to Afrihost. If it was a normal month to month then it would of been easy to switch/transfer your line to Afrihost.. If this is the case it's not Afrihost's fault.

It's like having a contract with Vodacom and wanting to port over to MTN, if your contract (eg. 24 months) has not yet ended your cant port over to MTN, unless you cancel the contract which is quite costly.. If You were on Prepaid it would of been a simply procedure as you are not bound to any contract.

I suggest you check with Telkom if You are infact on a contract or not. If it was done telephonically, ask them for the voice recording to verify if you did agree or not.

^^ This. Sounds like you're tied to a contract with Telkom. If you signed up initially with Telkom and got a free modem, you are very likely stuck in a 24 month contract. If you're not in a contract, you can transfer your line pretty quickly, and both Telkom and Afrihost will charge your pro-rata for your line rental, so you don't ever pay double for even a single day. Also there is no cancellation notice to give to Telkom. It just takes about 1 week (and very often even less) for the line to be transferred over.

So first try to establish if you are in a contract, and when it will expire. The other thing I remember about contracts with Telkom, is that the contract is almost always only on the ADSL line rental, and not on the data package. So you can probably cancel the data package part (i.e. Telkom Internet - Telkom's ISP division), and then use Afrihost for your data package instead.

There is nothing that Afrihost can do if Telkom won't release the line.

I had exactly the same experience, but I did not have a Telkom contract at all, never will have.
A.H. was happy to take my money for about 3 months for the Data side, with little or no help from them.
I eventually cancelled the AH account and just stayed with Telkom.

Telkom is like MS, we all love to hate them, but it is futile trying to swim upstream.

We had a 24 month contract, but it expired more than six months ago, that's why I don't understand the issues I am having ???

Sorry for your troubles. We absolutely do care and we do our very best to make transfer an easy process.

Telkom have introduced several restrictions recently to make moving lines over a lot more difficult. Aside from being in contract with them for your DSL line rental - if you have ANY active data products with them (including an email address) your line will not be eligible for transfer to us. However they are notoriously cagey about giving us information on exactly what is preventing the line transfer - so unfortunately only their direct client can glean this info from them in most cases :(
