Telkom to kill and replace ADSL

Wait.. what? Free data?
Telkom give an allocation like 10 Gb or something more based on your package they Give you a Sim or you can link it to any Telkom sim

Only reason I can't solely use Vuma is that a dynamic IP is a must for me.
That's an odd request? normally people want Static and IP's are Dynamic on Vuma it Does not change as often as ADSL and that too is like once a month normally (unless you force it).

My usage is also way too high to solely use LTE. Latency is moderately important to me as well.
Fibre is way better in that case.

Why would anyone want a dynamic IP? Really would like to know

A static IP is fine and well for most people... In fact, in some cases it's better.

The real issue comes in when you have multiple accounts on platforms where you're only supposed to have one.....:whistling: and trust me, VPN IPs don't help.

Vuma IPs are dynamic in theory, but it can literally take years for your IP to change, if ever.

With DSL and Openserve Fibre, getting a new IP is cake. Even easier with LTE, it's just so damn expensive.

Ahh got you - can't recall correctly but the ISP might be able to cycle your IP's - not really a regular request so you might have to find a small ISP that got time for customers to do little things like that?

I've thought about that, and any ISP that would be willing to do that for me over Vuma Fibre would get my business today. What I require is a pretty tall ask, and the ISPs would get sick of me very quickly.

As I said, my best bet when the time comes will be to have Fibre as my primary connection, and a modest LTE package for the IP sensitive stuff.

Doesn't alter the fact that the services are still less reliable, and worse considerably more expensive than my telkom line. These alternatives really only work if you live in a metro area where, apart from anything else, you have choices. For us country bumpkins we either don't have at all, or very limited choices, and while we accept that is the price we pay for other benefits, we don't like being screwed over and given a horrible non-existent option in exchange for what we have that is working just fine.
WISPs must have been giving good service, otherwise they would not have grown their business so strikingly in both dense urban and sparse rural areas and eaten into the DSL market so dramatically. I did the census for WAPA last year, and have access to some of their historical numbers, and their growth has been incredible.

That said, they are also providing fibre in certain areas, and where I have done my own comparisons around the country, I note that their fibre packages are cheaper than their wireless packages.

(PS. I don't have commercial interests in WISPs, nor are they my prime telco clients :))

Nope, Vodacom. The coverage map even shows that on my street that cluster of houses are on the edge of the signal. The real painful part is that I have a MTN tower roughly 10km away from me and not even that can get me LTE. The land she is not flat...
what about getting an external antenna, something like this:

When the power goes off I still have my phone and ADSL. with fibre= ZILCH. Dumb idea

My concern with that is lightning strikes, not sure if that is a valid concern though? When an electrical storm does come through the area they are vicious, I have numerous burnt out tree in and around my yard and the house was hit once before so I would not like to increase my chances of getting hit again. But once copper has died then it may be my only option :/.

install a lightning rod, as long as it's the highest object.

We are sitting in the same boat. Telkom terminated services 8 days ago and tell us it's due to a cable fault in the area which we suspect is not true and there is also no LTE or fibre in the area although their coverage shows LTE is available, we are situated in the "shadow" of the LTE repeaters so this is not an option. Been a Telkom customer for 30 years and this happens.

PERHAPS ....

Telkom is going the way of Eskom

Cut costs by ripping up something that is / was working ( WELL DONE cable thieves )
and
SELL off the copper in the cables

Trying to stave off looming bankruptcy
