Telkom uncapped ADSL investigated

This goes back to ISPA who have let us down

If it has a 200 gb cap, then just sell it as a 200 gb cap

That's a capped account - not uncapped. Apples and Oranges...

Depending on your needs, you can get plenty on that softcapped account if you schedule your downloads between 00h00 and 07h00, as you get that for mahala and at line speed (if you are not softcapped!).

I assume it was a 4mb line. In the past they shaped and throttled me on 200gig. Now they start doing that on 250-280gig.
I also assumed a 4Mbps account, but would like to see it included in the article.

Yup, thanks for redefining definitions ASA.
FTFY

Really I want to know what the ASA is smoking. Will they still see it as uncapped if it's softcapped at 1B and 1bps or is there an unstated cutoff somewhere? This needs to be referred to the CPA so we can have clarity once and for all whether it's acceptable to advertise softcaps as uncapped.

You mean the FUP or AUP of all ISPs should clearly define their usage thresholds?

I got >20GB in only 3 days of trying.
But I still support the complainant on the complete cowdung definition of uncapped that has now become the norm for us to deal with.

I agree... see my question above. :p

EDIT: Let me qualify though... you get what you pay for. You want cheap and nasty uncapped, you get cheap and nasty uncapped (with a FU and a FUP).

At least make your FUP policy clear. If you know what the thresholds are, you know what you are buying. They always talk about "affecting the user experience of other customers" but why then punish you for off-peak usage?

In keeping with the article, i.e. sticking to Telkom, you do not get punished for usage in Night Surfer time, which they consider to be their off-peak period.

I'm in agreement with the ASA and Telkom here as long as the point at which they throttle you is not too restrictive for the line speed.....

True uncapped,as per definition of some here, would make the prices sky rocket and make the model unaffordable to the average person.

I just fel that there should be no need to sue the word "true" before the word "uncapped".
Uncapped is uncapped.
Capped is everything that is not uncapped.

Rather than allowing advertisers to use the term "uncapped", the ASA/ICASA/CPA/whoever should just force ISPs to sell these products as capped (... the cap being the FUP limit) with the benefit of sloooooooooow internet access after the cap.
Try getting an advertiser to spin THAT!!

"Tired of a FU Product? Try us..."
