Telkom vs Web Africa FTTH, which one?

looks great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
data wont last long :P
your going to get a uncap account from someone els?
*steals your internet*

Bulk data will be consumed after hours (when it's unlimited).

I mean you can ditch your analogue line and use the RJ11 ports on the back of the fibre modem for voice calls. That is what I was told by Telkom rep. Connect your old phone to the RJ11 jack and see if you get a dial tone.

Old analogue line is plugged in there. R180 or something for unlimited calls to other Telkom numbers.

You mean your internal analogue reticulation running to your phones, not the incoming telkom analogue line?

Copper is gone. Analogue phone connected via Fibre modem.

Ok thanks. Good to have this 100% confirmed. Where you able to port your number to the fibre line? Do you have to take the R180 package or can you pay as you use it?

Wanted to dump the phone line, but missus wouldn't let me.

Same phone number as before.

For R10 more than your current analogue line (without calls) you get unlimited calls so its a no-brainer.

Woop another Pinehurst fibre fiend :D

Welcome to the club! Tis awesome :D

Please report on the speeds you get between 00:00 and 07:00 in the download+ window :)

PS: Your install looks SUPER tidy! Impressive. Will need to rewire mine.

Here are some real world speeds using SABnzbd. :wtf:

+/- 2GB file

+/- 300MB file

Speed 2.jpg

As someone else mentioned, the 2.4Ghz Huawei WIFI router that Telkom supplies is terrible. I've lost the WIFI signal several times already.

My ASUS DSL-N550U though was rock solid. Luckily the newer firmwares allow you to use the one LAN port as a WAN port and I've seem people using it with a Fibre modem. This will be my weekend project :)

PS, at first I only got 2.4MB/s but that was using only 10 connections to server.

Increased it to 20 connections and then I get 4MB/s.

Got Asus DSL-N55U ADSL router to work with Alcatel Lucent modem. Now I can get rid of that Hooowai thing :)

Are you using Telkom data? What is the performance like during the day time, specifically 6-10pm peak slot.

hows the stability now?
seeing a change in?
speed/linestats?

The ASUS has dual band WIFI so the WIFI is much better than the 2.4GHZ only Telkom router. Did a quick test. Upload and Download speed is the same. Latency increased a bit but I did not reboot both router and modem to see if it improves.

Still downloaded a 13GB file in 43mins at average of 4.1MB/s so I have no issues.

Yes. The "unlimited" Midnight to 7am Telkom data. Haven't downloaded during normal hours yet. Saving that for emergencies :p
Huge improvement accessing home PC via Teamviewer though.
