Telkom - Wait till it breaks attitude

My Telkom line runs on telephone poles at the back yard wall. My neighbours tree is about to snap the line and I cannot convince Telkom to come out and quickly disconnect, swing over the branch and reconnect.

"No Sir, we cannot help, your line is fine, we will wait till it is broken"

No wonder Telkom is doing so poorly, no preventative maintenance.

Switch off your modem, or better yet, just unplug the whole thing. Then call in saying your line is dead . Let them log someone to come over and tell the tech that arrives about the problem. But you might end up paying for this route in the end.

Yes, he'll be charged an unnecessary callout fee as there's nothing wrong with his line as yet.

OP, you do know that the tree is you and your neighbour's problem and not Telkom's, right?

^This, you and your neighbour need to sort it out. Cost me an extra R750 for our garden services to clear obstructing branches.

Yes........You will have to address it with your neighbor. Telkom no longer has a division that removes trees off their aerial routes.
Its up to the customer or municipality, if on municipal property. Telkom would only come out to replace if it snaps.
Call out shouldn't be charged because nothing is wrong with your private equipment inside the premises

Issue is I have 5 neighbours on my 3 boundary walls (excluding street). Telkom poles site in the opposite corners of my west and east neighbours. Tree is growing from adjacent neighbour on south side to the west side neighbour, so not my issue.

Thought I would do a good time, and save the hassles of downtime, just to get Telkom out to quickly resolve. Now when it snaps, Telkom will cover all costs. Oh well, guess this is how most state run companies are managed (I know Telkom is Private JSE, but majority share is from the state).

Have PM'd the Telkom rep, maybe he knows somebody who cares a little about saving some money.

To get telkom to come on a weekend when he is there is a hassle....

PS: May we have pics of the current situation?

When you log a fault and Telkom confirms the data and time, tell them to come on a Saturday or Sunday. They do that.

I couldn't stay at home for them during the week two weeks back and I explained to the lady on the other end. 10am on the Sunday morning the bloke was there and sorted my problem out :)

My line was down 2 months because of him.

I hear you. But how does that (your problem NOT HIS) make him a tosser for being careful due to past bad experiences? Should he get robbed again to accomodate you, will you take FULL responsibility?

Who doesnt show up on the weekend? The techie or the neighbour? But I understand your point now (despite still understanding the neighbours point too). Does the techie need access to his house or just his yard outside?

I dont allow ANYBODY onto my property unless I am there to supervise personally. I have two big rotties that make sure my rule is upheld :D . And if I didnt trust or know my neighbour, I would treat them the same I do any other stranger. Neighbour is cool and friendly and we get along, then I MIGHT make some effort.

Either the one or the other doesnt show up, and the techie has to access the pole on his property.

Is it possible to request a phone pole move from his house to mine?

Even if the request to move the pole was possible you would still need him to give permission for them to access his priority. Why not do the adult thing? Go to him. Explain situation very nicely (you need him more than he needs you). Try to get Telkom techie to be professional (perhaps PM TelkomZA to help) and show up on the agreed upon time and date. Ask neighbour in a very humble nice manner to do the same. Problem solved?

If the above has already been done, then he is either a douche, or just doesnt want to help you because you pissed over his wall one night while drunk and he is holding a grudge :D

OP, you do know that the tree is you and your neighbour's problem and not Telkom's, right?

Please correct me if I am wrong. The services provided by Telkom are governed by the Electronic Communications Act, 2005 as published in the Government Gazette on 18 April 2006. Chapter 4, Section 27 of the Act addresses the issue of trees and other vegetation obstructing electronic communications network facilities (i.e. cables) whether on private or State-owned land. In this clause of the Act, it states that any vegetation which, in Telkom's opinion, interferes with or is likely to interfere with the working or maintenance of the network, the owner of the land, at Telkom's instruction, is responsible to cut down or trim the vegetation. However the same paragraph goes on clearly to state that such trimming is at the expense of the electronic communications network service licensee, which in this case, is Telkom. If the owner of the land refuses to comply, Telkom has the authority to come in without permission and trim/remove such vegetation, giving due regard to applicable environmental laws in South Africa.
