Hi Guys & Dolls,

Word is that, ( I have it on good record ) Telkom is closely monitoring the Uptake of its wireless WCDMA Service. Should the uptake be good in the Current Coverage areas. Telkom might consider rolling out at least a WCDMA Tower in all the areas they have a Digital Exchange. This is excellent News For competition reasons. We South Africans will be exposed to nearly 6 Wireless Data Service Providers Nationally with National Coverage. This is excellent News For competition Reasons as prices will start to fall Drastically in 2009. Dont Forget Neotel's R5 Billion Financing has been approved and Accelerated Roll-out is commencing in January 2009. So if you are in a Telkom WCDMA Coverage area. Use the Service. Breakaway from MTN & VodaCom. Also Use Neotel where Coverage is available also. If we support the new Services with our CASH it is noticed. However everyone needs to participate where Coverage is available. Neotel and Telkom Wireless is far cheaper than the Current prices we are paying. So look for Value and Take it. I personally have Cancelled my MTN Data Contracts of which I have 2.
We need Telkom WCDMA to have 10 000 Data Users and Neotel to have 10 000 Data Users. This will be a great start for them to build on. Cell-C is also improving its Data Network and Pricing soon.

Lets Make Competition Work !

We can do it !

Every single user that Switches Counts ! Spread the Word Educate your Friends and Family !

BoyCoTT MTN & VodaCom Data @ R2 per Megabyte !

Don't you think Telkom has enough internet users to justify actually providing adsl to everyone?

Regardless, Telkom is set to rollout wireless WCDMA Service in all major areas in the future.

Yes so that they dont have to have wires on the ground.
I actually dont see any of us ever having fibre to home in the future.

I tried to get the service on Thursday - no-one knew what we were talking about at the Telkom shop. We then told the guy to look in tyhe back...he confirmed that there were indeed SIM cards there, but he did not have a clue what to use them for and did not want to sell it to us. In short: it was not possible to buy the service over the counter.

I dont know what the full procedure is to actually use the service, but this is a clear stumbling block to any large take-up of the service.

Classic Telkodemonopolies incompetence :D, I suppose there's a lot more to be said about info & training of the sales staff...the monopolistic beast will never be able to compete in its current state.

It there a map of coverage of Neotel. When I looked at their site there was not.

Well MTN

Well the best I have is CellC/Virgin & MTN EDGE. I have no wimax, no adsl & no 3G. So MTN EDGE the best I will get. When I asked Telskum when ADSL/wimax will be in my area i get told they won’t be doing upgrades . Yet I live 15KM from PMB. I ask you!
If I had another option I would move without even thinking.
What makes me sick is that they always deploy Coverage/Infrastructure in the city CBD's!!!! Neva just outside maybe they are missing a market of people because they only deploy service in CBD of cities. Then they stop and sit back to relax while we sit without broadband!

Telkom has WiMax for people not living in CBD's.

Telkom has WiMax for people not living in CBD's.

The 3G service is a huge rollout project costing lots of money. The WiMax is about 512Kbit/s.

Remember. Its for any company a better economic choice to rollout in a CBD coz that's where the money is. Platteland has no real financial potential except for agricultural reasons.

we'll have to see if the Do3G service can keep up.
At the moment the speeds are way better than anyone else that I've used... IF u have coverage.
But, alas, I suspect the speeds will only be that good until more people get on the bus. (so people in Montana Pta... rather get iBurst or Neotel :D :p )
At the moment I probly have the whole service to myself in my little cell, when more people sign up, its bound to degrade with each new user?
Unless.... Telkom invests properly.
But haven't we seen this before, the service starts great, but then the supplier's greed gets hold of them too much to put up more towers to support all the new users.
But, at the end of the day, more competition, should mean better life for us consumers.

Look if they give me coverage I will use them as their prices are beter but untill then I am using someone else.

In short: it was not possible to buy the service over the counter.

I hope you will be publishing a news article about this real soon, rpm!

According to http://www.telkom.co.za/products_services/w-cdma/faq.html:
"You will be billed on your current Telkom invoice..."

Why o why do I get the impression that a potential client doesn't qualify for Telkom's W-CDMA service unless he/she is an existing Telkom client?

It will be interesting to learn Telkom's input on this - especially if it is in response to a MyBroadband news article!

Nope... I'm not (was not) an existing Telkom client... I move around too much to get tied down by a fixed line :p
I wanted to test the W-CDMA service for the guys at the office ( i dont trust the "coverage" maps), cheaper than existing MTN/Voda... but prepaid only next year, and coz I didnt have a company letterhead, they wouldnt let me test on company's name.
So I took it on my own name... "u have 7 days to test, and keep or return/cancel" so I figured, I can test, and if it doesnt work for me, or my colleagues, I just return it.
So all u do is fill in the form, and walk out with the simcard a few minutes later... not a cent paid :D
But the speeds sofar (consistently over 2400 kbps downl) is very nice, I'll keep it, so I assume I'll receive the first bill end of the month.

Please keep us updated on the use, reliability etc... as we are waiting for this service because our lines are not being replaced (Stolen since February 2008) we are just waiting on the Tower transformation

Many thanks and regards...

From what I was told...The service is aimed at areas where there is constant cable theft! and so on I assume the service is open to anyone in all the areas providing the towers have gone through transformation which looks similar to that of a cell tower when completed, We have been informed in our area that all the equipment is being stocked by the 'Direct shops' and waiting for transformation of our tower which is almost completed i.e. Meyerton area!...Once completed they will contact us to see whether we want the service or not and our current number will change!...It would be interesting to see how effect the service will be...Apparently you can use the same sim card in ur cell phone...This I cannot say whether it's a fact or not as I have not yet got the service!...

yeah, I think u can use the sim in a cell phone too (havent yet tried it tho), I see u dial a number and listen, or send USSD or send sms to check balances, so I assume u need 2 put it in cell to do that.
I got an MTN B970 today, so was eager to see it work, as opposed to E220.
I get same signal strength as with MTN sim inside, but opposed to MTNs <1000kbps down and +-300 upload, I get 2600-2700kbps down, and 500-800kbps uploads with pings of 170-180ms.
But... MTN & Voda has the coverage advantage, so more mobile
I must say, being quite pessimistic about Telkom, I was quite impressed with the Telkom store and the service, definately not ex-gov employees :D
Will monitor it to see if Telkom is really commited to keeping up the good service sofar <touch wood>
Lets hope the speeds and service will be maintained, and, like this thread is about, will rub off on the other networks (especially the lower costs :p ), if users vote with their money... bad service and 40% efficiency bw speeds are not to be tolerated.

I'm Gonna be Spoilt For Choice SOON :)

I'm Gonna be Spoilt For Choice SOON :)

MTN - HSDPA
VodaCom - HSDPA
TELKOM - HSPDPA
CELL-C - EDGE @ 592kbps
NEOTEL - CDMA - Rev A
iBurst - 1mbps

However Since Telkom is the Cheapest and with the High speeds !

There's no prizes for Guessing who i will be With !

However I might have to switch Regularly between Neotel & Telkom if they Compete on PRiCe & SPeed :)
