Sure. How long has this process been going on? Who do you think they are going to allocate it to? Yes of course they make you beg, to no avail. If you're not entrenched like Vodacom, Telkom or MTN you get nothing. And what has that brought us? Artificially high pricing controlled by incumbents and no real competition. Look at the interconnect issue. Why do you think no / slow progress is being made here? Do you realise that countries such USA has had free telephone calls since at least 1989? That's 20 years ago matey.

For example compare a high site's power requirements to wi-fi and you'll see what I mean.

Higher transmission wattages require more input power.

Ah, so it's not so much that it's a dead technology and more that you would really like some for yourself and don't think you stand a snowballs chance in hell.

[Screamer Telecoms, which is using spectrum from Sentech for its WiMax needs, has rolled out an 802.16d WiMax access network ‘in the more heavily populated areas of SA’, offering broadband and voice services to consumers. According to Screamer Telecoms subscriber growth has been encouraging.

Our first few base stations were 802.16d but have since been upgraded and all our base stations are now fully 802.16e compliant

I can confirm that Telkom does not not want to install WiMax any longer. We just phoned Telkom to try to get WiMax at the office, but were told that management informed them that all WiMax installations have been put on hold.

With the advances in 3G / HSDPA and the mass of existing CELL type infrastructure, I can see how further investment into that (WiMax) technology would be met with resistance.

BUT ... if the technology is there already, and a customer wants to use it ... well dammit, stopping the sales process is just silly.
EDIT: Unless WiMax is causing more problems than its worth.
