Hi guys,
Anybody got wireless voice service from Telkom?
http://www.telkom.co.za/products_services/w-cdma/fixed_voice_services/index.html

As I understand it, u get a wireless phone (not unlike the Neotel phone/modem combo) that works on the Telkom 3G network, giving u "standard Telkom landline" prices for calls. It can also act as modem for internet.

I'm thinking of getting it, for family to use, to reduce cellula calls at home.
Whats your thoughts on the service?
tks

My buddy in Amberfield has this service as they have no copper in the complex.

Based on his experience I would not advise this voice service UNLESS you are in a very good coverage area and stay very near to the transmitting tower.

Data is great though!!

cool, thanx for the input... we've got good signal, the data transfer is great.
pity the Telkom guys won't give us a handset to test before chaining urself to 24month contract

A friend of mine has it and he has not been happier,

Got it last month...and cancelled my Neotel wireless. Also don't have copper in my area.....

Works great. Voice quality a little less that good but experienced similar with neotel. Went for the gateway option, i.e. E960 modem/router and plug a normal handset/cordless in for voice. This gives you option of multiple handsets which neotel cant give you. (or telkom with neotel like handset)

Data service pretty good as well and cheapest from all mobile operators. Initially got peal of 4Mbs and averaged 2,5Mbs. :)

Todays test:

Hope it stays this good....

Don't get me wrong; I'm a major telkom 3G data and mobile voice fan. I was speaking about the look-alike fixed wireless voice quality product from first experience over 8 months.

E960 modem and voice?

I have Telkom Closer3 working with Huawei ETS 6630 and Telkom 500mb data working on an E960. Is it possible to use voice on the E960?

Thanks

Have E960 with data and voice. Just plug a standard analogue into the E960 and you have voice at landline rates. Even plug in your cordless....

Speeds used to be great, over 4 mb, but droppe dnow to 2.5 mb. Suspect the towers are getting congested. Signal strength also dropped from green to yellow now.

On the Telkom product page they only talk about the voice service and the closer options
but say the download data speed up to 7.2 Mb/ but no prices for the data ?

Got me one of these 3G jobs - after my (and entire street) adsl line was stolen (& Telkom refuses to replace)................Pro's - can be moved around the house & able to drive around with it a bit or sit in the garden, without having to run inside, when the phone rings.
Downside - needs to be charged frequently (depends on usage off course) - to maintain goods signal strength.
data rates very expensive once you pass capp!

forgot to add; works ok with windows; but can be a bytch to install on Linux ( if anyone knows how, pls pm me)

- you can also insert the sim card in a 3g cellphone....

does this mean you can make calls from your cellphone at landline rates? (drools expectantly) :)

Gotta be careful now...

The answer is yes, BUT, only if it is the w-cdma fixed line lookalike service. It is NOT nomadic and you can only make calls within range of your own tower.

When you start roaming then the higher call rate applies.

ok so you are tied to a specific tower, not just a region (eg. 01x)
is there any way to see which tower is your 'home' tower and when you are not connected to it?

No. It will be trial and error, e.g. insert SIM card into any 3g cellphone handset and see how far you get before you lose signal!

Hi, I recently got my wireless Telkom phone with the 10gig Data from 8ta. works well, just a problem that I am limited to internet speed of 384kbps. Problem is that the 8ta data is on the same telkom SIM card and I only heard now that the speed limit is due to the devise. I can not see any specs on the speed limit to the device it self. Any advise?

Hi there

We can confirm that the Huawei wireless phone supplied with the Telkom Wireless voice solution is only capable of a maximum of 384kbps. You will need a device capable of faster speeds.
