The Icafe I work at has logged at least 20 gig per Telkom account since the beginning of this year...I havent checked the logs in a while, but if it stays like that I am gonna be very happy once I get adsl ^_^

Will be interesting to see if most or even all users get to 20 odd gigs before being capped. AS far i understand the 'relaxed capping policy' though, this simply isnt possible.

If it proves to be the case then telkom would actually have one of the most attractive dsl offerings available at the moment, which i surely something that has not happened for some time...?

Its gonna make it hard to keep people away from inflating telkom's already bloated coffers and promoting independent isps, but i guess if the product they offer is the best then many will forgo any form of resistence to the telkomonopoly and just jump on the bandwagon...which is a shame.

how many concurrent sessions can you have with a standard Telkm account

2gig a/c = 1 concurrent (R199)
3gig a/c = 2 or 4 concurrent (2=R249 4=R269)

Relaxed capping is possibe, irrelevant of the how much people download.

SAIX measures thier network usage in speed, not GB's so when thier network usage gets high they start capping users that are over thier 2 / 3GB.

Thus ISP's should be allowed to by speed from SAIX at a 1:1 ratio then decide thier own contension ratio's and publish them.

I have 2 Telkom Internet accounts, both 3 GB. Two concurrent logins at a time per account. Last month I got to about 23 GB with the one acccount before being capped. My second account was standing on 14 GB when the month ended.

My only worry is, as Telkom made it clear, they can give this preferential treatment as they are "managing" their bandwidth better, and can therefore alocate spare bandwidth to users up to a certain point. Since they therefore giving a better service (20+gb at the price of 3 GB) than other ISP's, people will start to migrate back to Telkom internet.

Now we are standing an a catch22 situation. We can complain that they are using their market dominance and killing other ISP's with their package, or we can stay quiet and enjoy the windfall ? Both options have its pro's and con's.

I look at it this way, the situation is tempoary.

1. Tens of thousands of users migrate to TelkomInternet in the hopes off huge caps, the more users that move there, the higher SAIX's network useage the lower the cap...

2. ISP's get gatvol and demand better capping policies, and they themselves start migrating off SAIX's network to IS and UUNet. Thus SAIX is left wanting (more users on SAIX via ISP's than via TelkomInternet)

3. ICASA & ISPA actuallty do something about the situation. haha

4. The SNO revolutionises the market. haha

Can you indicate if you are on 2G or 3G and what was your usage last month.

3Gig 512K business account. Usage last month was about 24G when the cap hit.

I just got capped. The usage tool shows 9 gigs but hasn't updated since the 4th. Actual figure is probably 12 - 15 GBs.

The pool seems to be shrinking :(

Downloaded : 9.6505 MB for the week
Uploaded : 6.3 MB for the week
Total bandwidth used : 15.9505 MB for the week
Total usage for February : 15.9505 MB

By the way im capped.

heh heh heh I figured out why it kept telling me i downloaded 300 odd MB on the 7th (with the 7th having not yet been by)

It was coz every time i clicked on "show graph" it would show me the first week of JANUARY, not FEBRUARY. Sure it was me not looking properly, but still, that's a glitch on their site...

Can anyone who is capped access Telkom's sites e.g. Telkom.co.za and telkomsa.net?

I am capped but can't access those sites.

I seem to be lucky

Well, I managed to get +- 28Gb on my FIRST account last month and +- 23Gb on my second account. Then I got clever and shared an account with three other people (the R269 Telkom account with 4 concurrents) from the 28th of Jan. All four of us have 1mb lines and we managed to average about 12Gb each for two days before the account stopped working. Thus, 12Gb x 4 x 2 = 96Gb in two days. I call that a DEAL seeing that we eached only shared the account costs (R269/4= R 65) and got a cool 24Gb each. Now that is what I call a GOOD deal. Go screw Telkom guys!!

My home account has just been hardcapped at 32 gigs.

I am also unable to even authenticate.

Total bandwidth used : 27.801 MB for the month (today)

Yesterday it was 15.9505 MB for the month

still no authentication so how could the xtra megs come into existence:eek:
