Telkom's call for help

Telkom has a tough decision ahead. Recent market talk says 10 parties, mainly institutional investors, are interested in buying part of the fixed-line operator's 66 percent stake in Telkom Media, the new pay TV firm.

Nothing with that name on it should ever sell... it must just die a sudden death. Shareholders must be hit the hardest. Management and Gvt must be made to answer for their actions.

I agree that sudden death is far too merciful, but I could go for some of that "mercy" right about now...

I wonder whether Telkom Media was ever more than a quick money making scam?

Spend an effective billion or so on getting the licensing and setting up a skeleton framework for show and then flog it off to the highest bidder for five times that price.

You don't spend what they have and go through what they have only to turn around a few months later and say you got the sums wrong and that it is not viable from their perspective. At least not unless you are a bunch of buffoons.

So which is it, malice or stupidity?

*evil laugh*
MWAHAHAHAHAH... Die Telkom Die!!

i, for one, am disappointed. i really wanted telkom media to launch (i'm assuming they wont find a buyer)... any competition is good, even if it comes from the likes of telkom.

some irony there

^^ I agree. I am not a fan of telkom but i was hoping for competition.

One thing i cant understand is cant they just launch with their new 5 billion or so rands?
Start smaller and grow, or even merge with ODM (if that is even happening)

BrendanD has a point... funny that they could get a license with a poor business plan - while the rest of the country gets turned down???

I don't think they would have gotten the license without submitting a good plan. Whether the plan was good for Telkom and the cat cats at the top is a different story.

Starting a media company like that costs a huge amount of money in the short to medium term and it could take years for them to see a profit. An immediate sale could see a small amount of people at the top making a lot of money in a very short space of time.

can't blame anyone for not being interested, who would want to work under all telkoms restrictions?!

Maybe they just woke up and realised they would have to compete against an established monopoly in a new field. Oops, we are not alone out there kind of thing.

monopoly that is a evil word (muti telkom choice)
