hi all

right, so those of you following this thread will know that all the uncapped offerings/ADSL speed upgrades are starting to take their toll on the various telkom exchanges.

we basically sitting in a situation where the DSLAM that you are connected to is "flat-lining" causing unacceptable download speeds and latencies.

typical example below of pings to both international and local duing one of these "flat-lining" periods

typically, one can change their ISP and will have no difference as the connection still needs to go through the telkom exchange. this was confirmed when I tested with 4 different accounts, all displaying the same issue.

so as time goes on, more and more uncapped offerings are being put onto the table. In conjunction with the speed upgrades on the various exchanges (10 mbps) its having a serious negative effect.

Short term solution for a user experiencing this? Get Telkom to move you to a different DSLAM. My concern there is that it will only be a temp solution. then the final quesion beckons,

What are Telkom doing to curb this? Are they planning on upgrading all the 10mbps exchanges?

900ms ping is simply not acceptable, and I imagine many people will cancel their ADSL accounts.

Your thoughts?

I have been noticing the same on our exchange singe 3 weeks ago every saturday from about 11:00 am the local latency is sitting at 400ms and int just under 1000ms then sunday its fine. This is on the Tableview exchange.

I had the same issues -registered some Targets ie mail.google.com on Smokeping
to see whats when the pings increase or not

So, if you're one of the lucky ones with a congested exchange Telkom is actually selling you a sub-par product. They're effectively overselling their offerings and making you pay for X while only delivering X - Y.
Can the CPA help? Petitioning? What about launching a class action suit?

Which makes Telkom's 'Uncapped with BF3 Bundle' a bit ironic. Have you tried playing BF3 (Open Beta currently) with 500+ms pings to local servers?

I'm one of the 'lucky' ones on the Bellville North exchange, and just about every evening from 7pm the latency goes from 10ms to anywhere from 250ms to 800ms.

On a non-congested 10 Mb/s Marconi DSLAM with 1 Gb/s backhaul and
the DSLAM is running at 150Mb/s - whew

I had this in march in Rondebosch - 400 ping no matter the ISP with no one else using the line.. Stopped gaming because of it.

With BF3 coming out I did a few tests and it seems it is back to normal.

And everybody lolled when Telkom said uncapped was unsustainable.......... Their hand was forced with them joining the uncapped hordes and S.A internet is going down the drain fast.

Telkom offer an 'up to' service. While their intention is to say up to 'speed x' it's rather coming to mean 'up to shyte'

I cancelled my 4mbps ADSL - it was just too slow and unreliable.

Now happy on Cell C at about 600% of the ADSL speed.

Oh, and it is cheaper too (for the time being).
