Telkomsa.net outgoing email problems

Good morning MyBB,

A friend of mine's father uses telkomsa.net

Incoming mail works fine, but he cant send emails....

Outlook, WIndows 10 Pro

Tried different smtp settings as per website

This is the error when setting up mail, or changing outgoing mail settings
 
Regular occurrence. Quite possibly the most useless email service provider in Internet history. Moving to Outlook.com or Gmail will cure the problem.
 
Telkom email is fraught with problems. I changed to Gmail and set up Forwarding from my old telkom email address to forward mails to my new Gmail account. Haven't had any issues since.
 
Telkomsa have issues for well over a decade.
@tcofran - please advise your friends old man to move his mail to a paid for provider. Email hosting is relatively cheap these days. If he’s on a budget then Gmail should suffice

The problems started since they moved from globalsa ??? to the their retirement estate, and they use the wifi provided....

The issue is telkom will not allow sending mail from addresses outside of their own network (relay not permitted)

Their old connection used Telekom as their ISP. Now they are using the Estate's ISP, which is not Telekom.

There is no fix. Telekom is anal about it. Move them to Gmail and set up forwarding on the Telekom mail box account
 
Ever since I got my invite to GMail in 2004 (it wasn't open to everyone when it started), I have just used GMail to send my email and collect from any other email address I had. The added features are a pretty damn fine spam filter and archive.

I have similar issue.
My dad has telkomsa.net email address
He does not want to give it up. He opened a gmail account and is slowly trying to move over to gmail.


He has the exact same problems that you described. I have tried to resolve this for years. But unable to do so.

The vast majority of ISPs will not allow relaying from other networks for obvious reasons, however they will permit relay as long as there is proper authentication first.

But this has nothing to do with Telkom's ineptitude at running a mail server or ISP for that matter, one can write a book about their bungling and barely substandard service.
 
Find out who the wifi providers use as their backbone carrier (perhaps do a speedtest on speedtest.net, that may show who the carrier is). Then find out if said carrier has an smtp server. Use that to send mail.

EG: if the wifi provider is part of the herotel group, you could try using smtp.herotel.co.za
or mail.herotel.co.za

Edit: I found this out when a good client moved to Groenkloof retirement village in George and insisted she wanted to keep her Telkom email address. Groenkloof uses Screamer Clearwire as their wifi provider, but a speedtest revealed it was being carried by Webafrica. I simply set up her mail to send via smtp.webafrica.co.za, without authentication, and it sent. One happy old lady. Then she sent me off to 2 of her neighbours with the same issue. All sorted.
Old folks just don't like change.... :)

I use smtp.gmail.com and it works. I use that email as throw away address.
Yes that too. GMail lets you use their SMTP to send mail. It is a handy backup when other SMTP servers are down.

But you have to have a gmail address and use that to authenticate, not so?

Yes. So? It's just your GMail username and password you use to authenticate. It's not like it costs anything.

Back in the day we used GMail SMTP on test servers. Was often so much faster than the ISP.

I recall a client point blank refusing to go this route. He stated categorically he would never use "anything google" because "they will spy on me". :laugh: That forced me to seek out alternatives.
