Hi.

I have 384kbps adsl with 2 isp accounts, afrihost uncapped and telkom 9gb account.
For the last few weeks I have had terrible pings on both accounts, it is fine now and then but most of the time 200+.

I have unplugged all other devices and disabled the wifi access point & closed all web using apps to no avail. This problem kind of started since the 10mb upgrades.

I am not sure if this is relevant but here are my router stats:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 381 kbps 127 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.0 db 11.5 db
Noise Margin 33.5 db 12.0 db

Any clues?

Do a traceroute to www.myadsl.co.za instead, using the tracert command-line app.

If you ask me, it's most likely the DSLAM/exchange that cannot handle the amount of throughput.

Brawler, hate to break it to you but Pada is correct. The monkey's that run telkom have overloaded our Exchange (Newlands).

I recon we probably have a high concentration of 4mb account users in our area, evident by the fact that after the upgrade to 10mb I can only just get 6mb out (was getting 4mb before). This is what is contributing to the high contention at our exchange and as a result increased latency on the line.

Yo I have the exact same problem on my 384k . It has been happening to me since a few months ago though. At first it was only at nights during the week, but now it happens randomly every day, and especially on weekends it is the worst. I have Webafrica, Cybersmart, Axxess and afrihost account, and all of them lag at the same time, i.o.w not ISP related.

I stay in Somerset West. I had 3 techies at my house, and each one had a different story
1. Too many people with the his new uncapped businesss, we cant help you
2. Tried to change lines and shiz to no effect
3. Told me that telkom doesn't guarantee latency only line speed.

And yes I have gone through all the steps you have of isolating my line against any interference be it apps/wan. My lag problem went away for a while when seacom broke down awhile ago. We don't have 10mb here yet afaik.

I tuned the techie that looked like he knew his job about "DSLAM/exchange that cannot handle the amount of throughput." But he said no it can't be that, in which case I think he is wrong.

Brawler, let me know if your con has improved. I had a chat to one of the Techy's now. Apparently they had made some changes to the Exchange which they have now rolled back to what they were previously. Apparently the changes were a standard part of the upgrade process for 4mb lines but not entirely necessary. I will test tonight.

I must give them credit though, I posted the problem online on Monday night, phoned to check status last night and defined the issue, today they actually did something about it. Thats pretty quick by Telkom standards.

Would that be the exchange which is on Belmont Rd by Rondebosch station?

It would be yes, dont know how many DSLAM's there are in our area though.

When I ping telkomsa.net (on 384 line by the way) I get an average of 37 ms. But it seems international is now yet again.. lagging. Getting 400-450 ms mostly. Usually I get about 350 for stuff like youtube. 50-100 ms difference. Getting annoying lol. Makes quite the difference for me ._. In PMB

My international seems fine on my telkom account and axxess

Interesting o.o I wonder if we're on the same exchange though. But for all I know it could just be some high traffic my side, or perhaps my uncle is downloading something. But I think if he was, it would lag ALOT more. But anyways. No biggy. Im sure it'll get better soon :p Although if you're up to it. Can you ping frantech.ca and tell me the ms replies? Then I'll know for sure :p

Makes me wonder how Hilton exchange is terrible when theres not too many users there or is there only 1 exchange in whole hilton?

As far as I know there's only the one exchange in Hilton. I know that there is a fibre link across the freeway (I'm on the Hilton College side of the freeway), and that there are mini-dslams for those lines, but I have no idea how Telkom connect those to the rest of the exchange.

Hmm. Thanks Colin62 ^^

Seems it could be the exchange or something else. Seems this time they're a little slow going by that ping but I was still getting higher pings :p
------

Just pinged frantech.ca now and the pings do seem better today as well as youtube.com (it's not local for me at the moment) getting about the same as below for frantech.ca

Anyways, I'll post here again if it gets worse/much better xP Hope the pings get better for all of us soon. Otherwise I propose we go out on Halloween and dress up real scary (note the word, REAL :p) and we scare em into fixing the terrible pings.

I hope you guys get it sorted out...I've been trying for 18 months now.....telkom ruined my online gaming experience COMPLETELY because of their fail technology.
