Tesla - Model S, a nerds dream car.

There’s also no start button. The car detects the RFID and starts automagically.
I hate to point out the obvious here, but doesn't the real reason that it hasn't got a start button have something to do with the fact that it doesn't have anything to start :p (being an electric car and all that ;))

Nice car, but streaming Google maps for the GPS via 3G seems a little silly.. it'll probably be on a lonely road in the middle of nowhere when you're really lost that you most want the GPS but have no 3G signal..
And of course in SA, where petrol price is almost on a par with bandwidth, it'll sort of defeat the purpose of having an electrical car. :D

Didn't Jeremy rip off the tesla for being an over-priced vehicle that spends more time charging than actually driving?

Necro thread!

Lately I've been very intrigued by the Tesla Model S.

Many reviews have been released on the car and they are all in favour of the new tech. The car looks great and is very practical for everyday driving. 0-60mph in 5,6 sec with range of 200miles(320 km). Not to mention that the car has tons of storage space due to the small footprint of the electric motors.

This car is also very innovative when it comes with features. It has an awesome 17" touch screen dash which controls almost everything in the car and it's also connected to the Internet via 3G. You can also get a phone app which connects to the car and for example you can use it to locate your car, check battery or since everything is electric, turn on climate control.

It is a bit pricey though; roughly the same price as an upper market luxury car. ($60k -$100k depending on model/features)

Tesla has recently also unveiled the Model X (SUV).

Anyone else intrigued as I am? Are these cars the future?

I wonder if South African born Elon Musk would bring the Tesla family to South Africa.

With the reliability of Eskom, he probably wouldnt just yet
To be fair, I haven't had much down-time in my area.

Besides all we need is a pioneer to bring alternatives into this country. We have plenty of sun and wind. I wonder why we are not using this?

Battery for my little car cost me R730. For a car like this?

Well over R100k. But I believe your first battery replacement (6years) is covered in the cost.

One unique feature about the model S is that it allows a quick battery swap. There are already some ideas that instead of charging your battery, they do battery swaps; almost like stopping at a petrol station.
