Testing second-hand flash before buying

Not sure about the 1d, but with the 40d (and 350d), you can control the flash level to + or - 2 stops from the camera. It's much easier to do that on the flash itself (unless you have a 420ex which has a mimimum of controls). I don't recall any other controllability (is that a word?) from the camera.

This book is excellent.

Looks interesting, but I think the oke's writing style will get my goat. Just reading the excerpts on Amazon and seeing all the yas and things like "Goin glam and throwin sparks" irritate me

PlanetNeil.com also has some nice articles on flash photography as well but it's seems to be aimed more at beginners and isn't very brand specific so he doesn't go into much detail on specific functions/features on the units.

I probably wouldnt have the time to read it in paperback.

I made myself a nice little bounce card out of the lid of an ice cream tub and it helps to soften the light.

This book is excellent.

I've got both Joe McNallys books I like them as it is an easy read. However, they are not really how to, or why books. You can extract some information from them, but their intention is not teach technique.
