Hi folks

All of the testing volunteers should have received an email by now. The testing procedure is slightly more involved than last time, but you only have to do what you feel comfortable with :D For those of you who did not volunteer but would still like to participate, here are the details:

Broadband Speed Test:

1. Download & install the testing software: http://home.telkomsa.net/rudolph/bbst30316.exe
2. Register the software using the following information:
Registration key: 222152313-4175 Email you used to register: [email protected]
(File>>Enter Registration Key >> ‘enter details’ >> OK)
3. Change the registration email to your own email address
(File>>Preferences>>email>> ‘click to send an address to the email you specify’ >> enter your email address and press OK >> check your email and click on the link provided >> go back to the testing software and click on ‘3’.)
4. Run the test (quick or full) whenever you have time and want to test your connection, and email the results to [email protected]
IMPORTANT: Please give your email address or the package you are on in the “enter additional message” area.

Web Based Speed Test
1. Visit the ADSLGuide Speed Test Page (http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp) run the web based speed test (please click on ‘detailed output’). Mail your results to [email protected] Please include your email address and/or your connection details (DSL 384, Sentech 256 etc.)

TCP/IQ

1. Download the ‘line speed meter’: http://www.tcpiq.com/tcpIQ/LineSpeed/Download/
2. Install the application
3. Register the application
4. Set the testing details
5. Email your results URL and package you are on to [email protected]

I understand that this can become a time consuming exercise, but it will be great if you can at least conduct the Broadband Speed Test a number of times and email the results to me. As a small consolation for all your trouble your email will automatically entered into the MP3 player/movie ticket competition :-)

Thanks again

Regards,

RPM

On my 3G it fails all tests [except upload/download].

I can manually ping the same servers and usually get a ping of about 600-700ms [on 3G]

**EDIT : Seems this might be a problem related to 3G specifically, not sure

Whats the minimum speed you want to test? Does DSL192 qualify as 'broadband'? Hopefully I'll have mine installed before the end of the month.

Hi Fergus

Any DSL 192 testers will be great, but I think the end of March will be too late :(( Next time!

I'm having a problem with the web based test (http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp)

I'm using jre-1_5_0_01-windows-i586-p.exe and firefox gets through the download and upload tests and the applet just sits there doing nothing with the "start" button greyed out. I left it for 15 minutes - nada.

Will check my smoothwall settings - I closed Zonealarm before testing, so I'm sure that's not it.

I tried with iexplore and it gave an error message.

This happening to anyone else? Keep getting a crash about 4/5 tests, despite rebooting etc.

i'm using jre-1_4_2 and gets the exact same problem. This happens in firefox AND IE.

I just got this Type Mismatch error as well, it was on test 32/38 (download test from European Server).

On BBST I'm getting 30-32% packet loss to UK and Europe EVERY time I run it. But on other tests that I do those kind of error rates don't show up at all. Maybe there is too short a timeout in the testing. These tests seem to be designed for sub 100ms pings - not achievable from SA.

I've just run BBST again and same Type Mismatch error on 32/38.

Also, on the test runs that have completed I get packet loss into 90% on all packet loss tests.

I've done a fair bit of the first test and 2 of the tcpIQ tests, but I still cannot get that Java web based thing to do anything. It does the upload, download and then sits there doing nothing.

As I indicated before, I've waited 15 minutes and just given up.
Other tests have worked fine, except of course for the shocking results for international connectivity ! - :D

It does appear that BBST has a 600ms timeout - I say that because that is
about the maximum ping length I've ever seen reported.

Now this is fine if you live in Europe/USA, but for us poor suckers in SA it is just not long enough. So the test is giving tons of packet errors /failures , when in fact there are little/no errors or failures, just a delay longer than the timeout allows.

Is there any remedy/setting to adjust BBST to allow longer?

I guess it's too late to even consider that on day 4 of testing, as any "tweaking" of things would skew whatever results have already come in.

Surely it's completely out of rpm's hands anyway, as a subscriber to the service.

I am running both BBST & LSM to verify the results from each app.

I have only run the web speed test 1nce bcos I have forgotten about it & when I remember my connection is down :(.

I have set both BBST & LSM to run automatic scheduled tests, and BBST automatically emails the results after each test to [email protected].

The speed tests seem to finish within the 60 seconds that Sentech has given us before the "modem emulation" kicks in. (Or at least the first test results are shown within 60sec period). That makes MW seem faster than it actually is for longer downloads or _work_; such as terminal services and mail up/downloads from work (pop or html).

For some reason our work's servers are being 60sec-capped. WHY?! Our lines run to IS! This shows on my happyness rating.

ST: FU, its faster than 5kbps...
Me: HUH?

It works only fine with IE...try it
