Thailand/Bangkok QA thread

Burger King, steaks and pizzas have always been expensive in Thailand. Why would you eat BK if you can have Thai food?

Where are you going to? Maybe I can point you to some cheaper eating places.

In Bangkok you can go to the top end of Rambuttri Street and have delicious street food for cheap, then pop over to Khao San for a few buckets. The food hall on top of Phantip Plaza is cheap, any food hall in a mall is cheap.
I can handle Thai food for short bouts but eventually tire of rice and noodles for everything. I actually had a steak in Rambuttri alley last night right near Rambuttri Village Plaza :) I avoid Khao Sarn road like the plague though. I used to hate being dragged there by ex-girlfriends to watch the human circus of backpackers and elephant pants.

Will head to The Mall Bangkhae this evening and then Central Rama 2 to meet some friends and will try out the food courts for some comparisons. I haven't been to a food court in ages.

Just as a note, the steaks, some drinks along with some Thai dishes (my friend didn't feel full after steak) cost just over 5k Baht (R2400). I almost choked on my dessert, so my friend did the whole Thai thing of scrutinizing the bill line by line

Nice, and how you finding paradise :)

You should know better than not to buy BK. Same as Pizza hut, McDonalds, KFC etc. If you want western food you will pay. I have noticed and my girlfriend has also confirmed this but you will see the end of the month, especially KFC, is very busy. For Thai's, eating western food is a treat.

My daily living expenses are very very low here. Weekends then i go out and spend money. If i want to go for a steak i can, if i want to eat western junk food i can. It balances out at the end of the day.

Coffee is also a fad here, i usually buy my coffee from 7/11, costs me around R9 a cuppa so i cant complain.
Yes prices are not what it used to be in 2019 but i still live a very good quality of life here.

Its all about balance. Where you staying and whats your plans
It's a lot quieter and so many of my old haunts are gone, but I'm enjoying having somewhat less traffic and more quiet places.

I'm staying at the Amari Watergate until tomorrow, then heading down to Samui to catch up with some old friends before heading up to my farm in Muak Lek.

I love one night in KSR but usually end up in Rambuttri, I try to stay in Rambuttri either at the Viengtai that is now an Ibis Hotel or one road up at the Dewan.

I don't think I have ever had a bill of more than 2000 Baht for two and that would have included a lot of beer.

5000 Baht I want a Michelin Restaurant. :)

I miss Thailand, will have to go back next year.

Very nice. How was the steak compared to SA. My girlfriend works for a French steak house franchise here and i also go eat their steak very often but its never the same.

They do the whole dry aged beef Tenderloin and although not bad, its not great. I have had much better. Steak sets me back 850 baht.

Here in soi thonglor traffic is hectic, dont waste your time trying to book grab between 8 and 11am in the mornings or 4-7pm evenings. Sukhumvit is a fekkup.

You just missed most of the raining season, up until last week we had massive amounts of floods.

I have found that steak anywhere in the world is a disappointment compared to ours.

But the world has become an expensive place, this year I have been to Turkey, London, Paris, Croatia and the south of Germany and everywhere stuff are expensive. People told me Croatia is cheap compared to the rest of Europe but I did not find that to be the case. It was on par with France and the rest. Turkey in the tourist areas is definitely not cheap.

Thailand remains a budget holiday destination. (If you eat Thai food and stick to beer.)

It wasn't too bad, just very thin which meant it was very little for the price. I'm glad I missed most of the rainy season and I could see how hectic I must have been just looking at the debris floating in the river. I'm also surprised by how much animal life has returned to the city. Had a monster fruit bat swoop down towards me from those Banyan trees near Rambuttri road as the road curves towards Phra Pinklao bridge. Noticed hundreds of them nesting in the trees and more monitor lizards roaming the place.

I'm going to be in the city a little longer. Just noticed that my driver's license expired in 2564, so I'm going to have to renew that first :crying:

Where are the best place to get quality street food on the Patong area? I imagine my kids will live off Burger King and McD but my wife and I are rather looking forward to the street food, it looks amazing on the videos we have watched.

Also, is the Rawai Seafood Market worth the hype?

Patong... Many restaurants all along the main road. Good quality stuff. I wouldn't even call it "street food". They are more like roadside restaurants.

Got this on my first day in Patong:

This is the place: Kochet Food. I literally found it by walking down the road. It looked good, we went in to try it out.

Encourage your kids to try Thai food. My biggest regret is not eating more. :crying:

Ist that beer cold? In Bali the beer was warm, bloody hated it. Luckily, we frequented a particular restaurant every night and we arranged for a case of beers to be kept ice cold. Other than that they put ice in the beer.

My eldest son would eat it but the youngest live off nuggets lol.

What was the cost of this meal if I may ask?

Beer in Thailand is cold and you get it in those beer condoms.

In Patong its the best to eat at these small Thai restaurants at the side of the roads or in side streets, they will also serve food suited for kids like nuggets or spaghetti bolognaise.

The pic is not of my food but my guess will be that those dishes will be between 80 and 120 Baht a dish. The small Chang will be 60/70 Baht.

If you go up Bangla Road about half way up there is a small side street on the right with seafood places down a narrow lane, further up on the right they will have food carts but I found it to be cheaper to rather eat at a Thai Restaurant. At the top of Bangla turn left and not far away on the left hand side there are some more seafood places.

Protip: If you are getting hot and bothered go to the Jungceylon Mall for some air-con, in the basement floor they have a food court.

Street food is all across the main road patong. There are various open areas where there is food stalls and markets so there is no shortage of streetfood.
A few recommendations, eat where the locals eat, shop where the locals shop.

Also if you doing patong, don’t forget and don’t miss the Phuket Sunday night market in the old town. From around 3pm they close the roads and setup stalls and stuff. It’s one of the things you cannot miss when you on Phuket.

Yes all food markets is worth a visit.

Going down my camera roll, I'll even give you another example.

This was another restaurant on the main road. Went in there for supper one night before hitting Bangla.

On this occasion, we bought a starter and a main. And I bought a Thai Whisky (not sure why, guess I was feeling fancy). Googling it now, I see that Sangsom is actually a rum and not a whisky. Go figure.

All in, cost approx R200.

Excellent point, I forgot about this!

Most of these restaurants had sections in the menu for Western food. Chips, Burgers, Fish, Nuggets, Pastas. Most had multiple options. I guess they accommodate for people who might not want to eat Asian food.

I would say, always ask for the menu and take a look before you go in. Don't feel obligated to always go to BurgerKing/KFC just because of the kids. You will find something for them in the roadside restaurants.

The last few day we will actually spend in Phuket Old Town. My eldest son turn 10 and he wants to spend his birthday at the Andaman Water Park (my wife too lol).

Is 4 days too long in Phuket Old Town. Thinking of spending the last 2 days on the beach in Patong instead.

I believe the beers are rather potent? My youngest brother got absolutely hammered in Pattaya. Then again, they started drinking when they were waiting to board at Cape Town International.

This is why I want to go to Thailand it is very cost effective and I really love the cultures in South-east Asia as a whole.

4 days is a long time yes. But from old town you can grab a taxi to many other nice beaches in the area. 2 nights in old town is good but make sure you are there over a Sunday.

My recommendation to patong main beach, it’s hectic, it’s busy, many many scooters and bikes and tourist and craziness. If you thinking of spending time In patong. Rather stay towards the far end of patong beach. It’s a lot more private and quieter but you can still walk to the main beach.

Also, don’t look at them funny when they serve you beer with a separate glass with ice.
People here drink beer with ice lol.
