Thailand/Bangkok QA thread

They have been building an airport on Koh Phangan for many years but it remains unfinished:

There is also a new ferry from Pattaya to Samui if you have time:

Yeah the project was terminated due to it encroaching on a protected marine park if I remember correctly. The corruption level went through the roof on that.

Leaving for Thailand on Sunday. Just a question for those that boarded international flights recently. The documents required when checking in, is it only your passports and e-tickets?

Yep, that's all you need for checking in. Just take a printout of your bank statement with you just in case you get asked at immigration in Thailand. They seem to love checking Saffa finances at the moment and they will probably check your return ticket too. Thanks to some Saffas who have overstayed their visas lately.

Thanks for the quick reply. Money ain't an issue. Will they insist on printed statements or can I show them pdf versions as well?

PDF should be fine. They technically want people to have 20K Thai baht in cash on them or the equivalent in a foreign currency, but they seem to be OK with statements and even being shown the amount via internet banking apps.

You won't have a problem if you explain that you will be travelling to Cambodia/Malaysia in between but I would rather get the R500 60 days visa as the visa run is going to cost you more than 1000 Baht and you are going to waste at least a day.

But if you want to see Angkor Wat and Siem Reap then do the flight option for 2/3 days and head back to Thailand.

I have not been to Siem Reap but Phnom Penh is also a very interesting place with a great waterfront next to the Mekong River.

Thinking about it more I will do the Cambodia trip for a few days as an excursion.

Thanks man!

Yeah, I'm thinking of changing the trip a bit so that I can spend more time in Cambodia (last 2 weeks or so).

This will also mean that I will be in Thailand for less than 45 days so visa won't be an issue.
Check Air Asia for cheap flights to Cambodia, you can get an evisa online if you fly into the country.

Hey

Going to Phuket for the first time. Can anyone recommend a island hopping tour. We have a day free.
Which tour and where to book would be appreciated

Thanks

How easy it is to find employment?

The easiest way to find employment in much of Asia is as an English teacher. Some countries are harder to get in than others as some want qualified teachers but I don't think Thailand is that hard to get into (I knew a lady who taught in Thailand for a while without a teaching qualification).

The salaries are usually not the best but enough to live off and sometimes, you can stay rent free.

Not that easy anymore as they cracked down hard on foreigners without qualifications. Also, Saffas are now barred from obtaining Non-B visas from embassies or consulates in any of the neighboring countries, which means a trip back to SA. Even super-friendly consulates like the ones in Savahnakhet, Laos and Kota Baru, Malaysia now have signs outside saying they no longer issue Non-B or tourist visas to South Africans.

Should have phrased that better. What I meant is that there are Asian countries that take in English teachers who may not be qualified teachers but as long as they have degrees (it can be in any field). The lady I knew teaching English there had a BA but was not a qualified teacher.

Taking a job without a degree in English teaching is asking for trouble.

You could be deported and even if you get away with it, it's bound to be someone who is dodgy.

I had to cancel this trip as my wife had a heart bypass, would have flown out today.

Just booked a new trip from 12 to 31 July. :D

Ticket prices are crazy. Planning to go in November.

I got tickets Cape Town to Koh Samui, and Bangkok to Cape Town for R15 000 pp on Singapore Air.

My previous tickets with Ethiopian for the same flights were R21 000 pp.

Booked tickets and accommodation separately or got a package?

Separate, I always DIY my trips. The Bangkok hotel cancelled my reservation free of charge, the Samui hotel kept my money in credit for use at a later date. I luckily did not book all my hotels as we travel on the fly and will book once I get there.
