Greetings from Phuket :)

Just wanted to do a blog/report from my travels in Thailand (first time visitors).

The trip will include parts of Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai and Bangkok. Accommodation will be a mix of hotel rooms, apartments and even a room in a hostel (Ao Nang). If you're planning a trip to any of those places and need some info, I'll try my best to help out.

My fiancee and I got in late last night, travelled via Dubai from Durban with Emirates. We're staying in a dodgy area of Patong, but with a very decent room for an obscenely cheap price. The room was booked via AirBnB, as were most of the places at which we will be staying.

After checking in, we took a taxi from our place to Bangla Road. The taxi cost 200baht and was in line with what the tuk tuks wanted, with no one really wanting to haggle. It was a bit frustrating because I knew it was only a km or so away but I didn't have a local SIM for Google Maps yet and since it was past 11pm I didn't want to have to go bumbling around looking for it. However that experience was offset because within the space of 5 minutes I saw a drop-dead gorgeous prozzie get off a motorbike with an older 'gentleman', a massive ladyboy with some awesome boobs, and a street fight..

Bangla Road was quite the experience :) I loved the **** out of it, and the fact that even though it was close to midnight on a Wednesday evening the place is absolutely packed. Of course, the numbers are quite inflated since it seems that for every tourist there are 3 people trying to direct you into their bar/restaurant/sex dungeon. We walked the roads for a while before finding a SIM package that I was OK with. We didn't get anything to drink except a couple of waters, but the booze prices didn't seem too bad at some of the kiosks we saw. We visited the beach and a few side roads as well, for the most part everywhere was busy.

With access to GPS we decided to walk back to our place. The walk would normally take around 15 minutes but by the time we stopped and checked out every place it was close to an hour and a half. Local time was around 2:30AM when we found a place at which we were happy to eat, quite close to our hotel. I opted for a shrimp/prawn soup and my fiancee had some pineapple fried rice. Mine was excellent, fresh and spicy. My fiancee also loved her food, I'm not a fan of the drier rice dishes, but the flavour was great.

It was the first time I tried Chang, and I enjoyed it, though it was a tiny bit on the sweet side.

It was still only around 11:30-ish SA time by the time we were done, but we were quite tired due to the travel so we headed back to the room, showered and passed out in the nice cool air conditioning.

Nice! Enjoy it R.

I will be following closely for the food and photos of course!

Nice dude! Enjoy. Patong is absolutely crazy.

150baht? Holy moly thats expensive, i guess it is tourist central.

Go try the following food:
(Gai = chicken, moo = pork)
Tom Kah Gai - Coconut Milk soup with chicken, so good.
Pad Ka Pao Gai - the classic meat fried with basil and chilli and ask for a egg on top.
Laab - not sure if u can find it as its more an isaan dish, fried up chili mince served with mint and you wrap it in lettuce leaves.
Yum Badook Foo - Also maybe difficult to find, have to ask by name - Its fried fluffy fish, basically all the meat is like flash deep friend and comes out really crispy and fluffy, served with a delicious sweet/sour/spicy dip.

imo LEO > Chang :P Tiger is also good. bars are ridiculously over priced there, go buy form 7/11 but 60b for a big beer at a restaurant is decent, not the 150 for a small the bars in patong charge.

Lookie lookie, shoppy shoppy.

Miss that street food. Fried ice cream and those Nutella waffles.

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing. Will definitely follow.

You must take the ferry to Phi Phi and then spend the day on a long boat visiting the islands - awesome, awesome experience and it's super cheap (well it was in 2009 when I was there).

When in Bangkok, you need to go experience Pat Pong Street :D

Also- the fruit there is amazing..
See here
Rambutan - Ngoh are epic

@OP: You won't be able to haggle regarding the prices with the taxi's or Tuk-Tuks, it's a Mafia with fixed prices. I would rather spend that extra 400 to 600 Bht per day on getting a place closer to Bangla that is within walking distance in the heat. You will be able to find relatively cheap places close to Bangla and the Beach.

Here is a place that is not even 5 minutes from Bangla and across the road from the beach for R675 tonight (1760 Bht) and it includes a nice balcony.

It is also in the heart of the cheap eateries in Patong. If you go eat in the lanes where this place is situated you will get food for cheap. 80 to 120 Baht a dish. The one place on the left hand side even has a lobster bisque for 50Bht.

To orientate yourself, walk down Bangla Road, when you get to the beach turn left, keep past Tropica Bungalows (my favourite), past Patong Seafood, past the Banana Disco and mall till you see a One-Stop supermarket. Just past the One-Stop you turn left, the further down you go the cheaper the food will get.

@Ping Pong show people: Rather go watch a ping pong show in Bangla on one of the side soi's, PatPong is a ****hole and the shows there are rip-offs and can get dangerous with over aggressive bouncers and bar ladies. No filming or pics allowed. Rather spend your night time on Khao San Road and the adjacent Rambuttri Road.

Enjoy. A trip to Thailand is on my wishlist for 2018.

Check at the bottom of my website in the Phuket section for some info on Ao Nang.

I must still update my website with Chiang Mai but if you go there I found Pai to be better than Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai was very boring for us. I would rather spend more time on the beach areas especially in the current hot season.

My best advice: If you want to chill but also go to a jungle one day and go snorkeling on beautiful islands the next day then go to Nang Thong Beach, Khao Lak. http://www.thailandtips.co.za/nang-thong-beach-khao-lak.html
