I'd like to go there and squeeze in a bit of muay thai training in the mornings before the touristy stuff
Never even been on a motorbike/scooter so noWanted to take lessons but then again seeing the driving here I wouldn't chance it.
I had also never ridden a scooter. My ex and I rented one for our entire trip (Koh Samui), it was great. Some dodgy moments but came away unscathed.
Let me tell you, scooter trips after drinking shroom shakes at The Rock Bar all day are a very interesting experience

The cheaper places seem to use instant coffee and I'm not about that life..
It is cheap, for the size of the meals and the variety and taste it is cheaper than you'll pay here in SA.

), Anong Thai in Cyrildene (Joburg) is as close as you'll get locally. It's on par with what you'll get over there, and it's cheap!You shut your whore mouth..

As poffle said, Patong is tourist central so prices are massively jacked. Chiang Mai and Bangkok should be a lot better. That being said, we've spent on average R60/dish which is great value compared to the Thai places in Durban, and the they taste way better in my opinion.

it is cheap for a holiday but like Randhir paid around R19 for a iced coffee and R300 for a kg of prawns
taste wise i cant say as i havnt eaten that side
What does a kg of tiger prawns cost in SA? I don't really order them at home so I'm not sure.

Basically the street food is cheap, and beers from stores similiar to 7-11. It seems as though at bars you will pay the same as here.

Weird thing happened this morning. I was feeling for some breakfast since I hadn't really eaten since the early supper the previous day. I went looking for some breakfast and joined a buffet at a nearby hotel. I took a seat and ate some brekkie, and when I was done I went to the waiter and asked for the bill. He gave me a sideways look and said that the buffet was for hotel guests only, and that others could only order from the menu, none of which was written anywhere around. I apologised and he shrugged, looked down at the hotel guest list, crossed out a name (it was close to the end time of the breakfast buffet) and told me to have a nice day.
We visited the local OTOP for some browsing and shopping. The fiancee (just gonna abbreviate to TF from now on) has had her eye on some elephant pants or whatever the **** they're called since we planned the trip. She found some patterns which she really liked at a stall and was quoted 450B. We refused and moved on, and the vendor dropped the price twice. We ended up paying 450B for three pairs.
Lunch was at a restaurant near the OTOP. TF felt for a revisit of the pineapple fried rice and I went for the fried duck and somehow ended up getting stir fried duck. Still very tasty, and for once I actually felt the heat from the chili. I didn't protest the mistake too much and the waiter slipped me a beer on the house as a sorry.
Cost of the meals was 150B each.

Yes from my experience the price of comparable food in Phuket = South Africa = Japan (surprisingly). Coffee always worse.
Would be interesting to hear your comparison of the other areas to Phuket!

Thailand was extremely cheap before Zuma came and ruined the Rand.
I started going there in 2000 and it usually was 6.5 to 7 Baht to the Rand up to 2007.
@OP to put that in perspective I paid R16 for 100 Bht.
So if you stayed in a 2000 Bht place you paid R320 per night.
The most expensive place we stayed at back then was 1000 Bht a night.
I bought pork on rice for 15 Bht at food markets.
In Chiang Mai and Bangkok there are many food markets in the malls .
