Thailand Trip Report

It's like Bokka is trying to make me depressed..

I've been to the Food Bazaar, haven't eaten there. Food seemed decent but we weren't hungry and I'm not in a rush to return to Jungceylon tbh.
 
Waiting to get picked up for the ferry to Ao Nang.

I went to Thailand solo in 2011. Did a bit of diving and sight seeing. Only ever drove a scooter around, worked out to about R60 a day...even though I've never been on one before.

They usually do daytrips to go diving and/or snorkelling near Phi Phi. Used to be good conditions, not sure how it is now.

There was an earth quake while we were diving, so we didn't feel anything in the water, but when we got back to land we got evacuated due to a tsunami warning, to higher ground for around 8 hours until everything cleared. The taxi drivers were pretty well organized - as much as you can be in that chaos, but they managed to evac the entire Patong, Karon, Kata and then some. Even the airport had empty planes taking off as a precaution.

As for Phi Phi Lei itself, try to get a speedboat rather than the ferry since the ferry doesn't take you onto the actual island itself. It just stops in the bay.

Stayed in Karon at a small hotel that was cheap and very clean and had a pool on the roof and free wifi so it covered the bases.

Some nice views if you just get on a scooter and get lost in the hills.

@Voicy, you went there all on your own ? For how long ? I'm thinking of planning a trip and at present seems it would be me, myself and I.

Sounds awesome man, was considering calling the thread "Randhir does Thailand"

The problem is that it isn't just me, I wouldn't really be able to learn on the fly with TF as a passenger.

Best bet would be to book into hostels in my opinion, especially if they have single rooms available. Best way to meet other people on a solo trip..
 
Last night we decided to see what the Indian food in Thailand was like. Surprisingly, not bad at all. I found TF's butter chicken a bit on the sweet side, but my chicken rogan josh was great.

We've been in Ao Nang for a couple of hours and I prefer this place so much more than Patong. It's lovely here, way more laid back and chilled. The weather at the moment is great too, overcast and not too hot. I think we're going to find out if we can hire a private longboat for tomorrow.

At the moment we're about 40m from the beach surrounded by great restaurants and massage places and bars. Seems a bit cheaper than Patong as well, TF got an oil massage yesterday in Patong for 500B and everywhere here they're 300B.

Lunch was good. TF ordered the seafood pizza and while it was tasty, the crust wasn't what you really want. No surprise there really. My tom yum goong was amazing, even better than the first.

A big Chang here was 85B, during happy hour ie from 11am til the night, as it was described to us.

Enjoy , seems like an awesome place to visit, once in everyone's life.

I had a few questions though,

possible to fly there ex JHB but NOT via Dubai (can't visit Dubai for my own reasons)
Heard it's possible direct Hong Kong (Cathay) from JHB. Any cheaper/more expensive?

Renting scooter? Can it be done with a RSA licence?
Does it need to be a motorbike licence?

Bitcoin exchange/ATM's, any exist? Better rates than local currency?

Crime and pickpockets? How helpful are the tourist police?
Do they actually help tourists or are they after a bribe?

Medical insurance, does discovery locally pay for if you need to visit a doctor/hospital?

I think @bokka1 is better placed to answer that, but iirc you need to get an international drivers, but it isn't difficult or expensive.

It comes and goes but really doesn't seem to be too bad at the moment. Definitely not as bad as Durban at the moment though.
 
I did not like Phi Phi, enjoyed Krabi and Phuket and Bangkok. Stayed at many hotels there.
Stayed at the hotel in Hangover in Krabi, amazing place and swam with a baby elephant
Bayoki Sky in Bangkok also pretty good with amazing breakfasts

Its more Thai from what I can remember but you can have both, I could have stayed there all day eating dragon fruit.....ohhh dragon fruit how I love you

Phi Phi for me was there for young backpackers, I prefer luxury :D


I stayed at the Kata Beach resort, very nice and great beach
 
Will definitely try some dragon fruit and report back.

Having a coffee shake while we wait for the rain.

If you in Bangkok go to the MBK chopping centre and go the top floor I think IIRC the food there is incredible, you pay and go to all the different places. I would suggest do not eat the whole day until you go there

Yeah man, I do all my travelling alone. Taking the gf to SA in Dec was the 1st time I had a travelbuddy. Did 10 days after I quit my job. But this isn't my thread so I'mm shut up.

Would've been a cool title :p, but "Lived666 does Everest" would've knocked us both out of the park. :o

I basically just went for the diving, still met people like that, but hostels are defo more social. I'm an introvert to the core, so it's not really my scene anyway.

Keen to read what else you're getting up to there!

Btw, there's a small secluded beach off Kata which has a nice vibe to it as well. I took a long swim one afternoon from Karon with my fins on and ended up getting swept halfway there. Had to climb out on the rocks, walk through the bush and then trek back through the city with just my boardshorts, mask and fins.

Interesting place, hectic poverty, but no begging or aggression. That really stood out.

Nah man, most of the reason I started this was because previous MyBB Thailand threads helped me so much. I'm hoping that it'll be of use to others since Thailand is obviously a popular destination for Saffas, so feel free. The more info the better.
