Thailand Trip Report

+1 Singapore. We chose a 35 minute connection in Changi and it was fine.

question from my side, I understand most flights to Thailand from JHB go via Dubai, is this the cheapest? or can flying somewhere alternative work out cheaper?

like flying from jhb to Hong kong (direct) and catching a Dragonair to Thailand, phuket?
or even flying via LHR via BA direct to Thailand work out cheaper

reason I ask, is I would rather avoid that part of the world (Dubai) if possible, for political reasons.
How much is a transit visa if u go via LHR?

Hi, let me ask the question slightly diff. Best way to deal with cash.
1. Get enough dollars for trip here and then exchange at phuket airport?
2. Just get baht here in sa and enjoy trip?
3. Just go nuts and swipe your fnb or virgin card there?

Ps if any one has an fnb global acc in dollar with card and think its better, let us know

I went to BKK a few days ago. I got the best rates at money exchanges outside of airport or ATM.

using Singapore $:

Changi Airport: $1 = 22.4b
Bangkok bank ATM: $1 = 22.1b + 220b withdraw fee
Money changers: $1 = 23.1b - 23.4b

Well guys arrived in Phuket yesterday after a couple days in Singapore. Currently staying in Amari on the outskirts of Patong and I must admit my only regret is not coming earlier. Went to Bangla road last night and my goodness the place is Hatfield Square in its prime x 100 with a few additional "sales people". Any recommendations of trendy bars or restaurants in Patong and then Phi Phi which I am hitting on Monday?

In Bangla Road I had a great time in a venue called Lion Livemusic. I think they only open late afternoon, but the performers are pretty awesome. Spent a lot more time there than I planned to. For a more Western vibem if you've been there for quite a while, there is an awesome Irish pub in the Jungceylon Mall. Also, if you exit the mall from the other side, there is another Tiger Bar,, which I think is better than the one in Bangla Road.

My go to place has always been the Kangaroo Bar but that is purely for beers and people watching.

Phi-Phi has some cool pubs and cluns that are close together deeper into the little town closer to the other side of the island (not the pier side where the ferries come where you will find most of the touristy restaurants)

Thanks guys last night was pretty crazy. Had a few cocktails and free shots at one of the bars in the side street where we also played bar games with the owner, will post the name tonight. There are lots of live music places but thumbs up to slootvreter lion music bar is amazing. Sat on the street side for a beer and an hour later was inside Jaming on the in front of the stage. Also went to tiger club but was pretty average for me. Definitely gonna hit lion again before we finding a sports bar for the rugby.

Pphiphi I enjoyed that bar thats opposite Sabai restaurant

Youtube suggested some random videos about Thailand to me.

I fell down a youtube rabbit hole.

Pattaya has changed a lot. Still many European travellers but there are many Indian(from india) & Chinese tourists.

Many indian businessmen in Pattaya & they run "indian discos".

When we going ma se kind?
Saw this and was considering it, maybe @ice_cubes, @L-Dog @Randhir and others can advise :

Deal looks pretty good just double check the flights and hotels prices. Best way to compare is to check the prices on bookings.com and the the flights separately and add maybe R 1000 - R 1500 for transfers / ferries etc. (Make sure hotels have HVAC as it is pretty hot and humid)

Would definitely recommend Phuket, Phi-Phi and Krabi combo with a possible stop in Bangkok although I haven't been to Krabi or Bangkok but heard good things.
