Well, I hope you and your S3 will be very happy together. But what does it have that the iPhone 5 does not? According to you, the iPhone 5 has not advanced for 4 years. Therefore the Samsung must represent four years of technological progress. Please give details so that we poor ignorant sheep may also be enlightened. Tell us about all the wonderful progress that has been happening in the last four years.

I'll spot you the aircraft-carrier-sized screen. That alone would stop me from ever buying one. Go on, what else does it have? And by YOUR own rules, software does not count. What amazing new hardware does the S3 have that has no equivalent on the iPhone 5? A pico projector? A cold fusion reactor? A BUILT-IN 3-D PRINTER? Oh, it's just a screen, a CPU, some RAM and a battery just like every other phone out there, is it? Like every other phone since, gee, I don't know, around 2007?

Did you just buy it in an emotional fit, then?

Of course, by MY rules, software does count. and I do feel sorry for you having to fight with Android from now on. But it's still better than BB.
 
There has been nothing revolutionary in the smartphone scenario across android, apple or windows mobile beyond screen size, speed, display quality. The big paradigm shift was from candy bar / blackberry / win mobile with stylii to the current form.

Iphone 5, S3, lumia, one x- all much of a muchness and brand preference and price now - the smartphone market has matured and the iphone 5 demonstrates that.

What does the iPhone 5 have that the S3 doesn't?

Other differences between the two:

S3 available NOW locally

iPhone5 available locally in 5+ months, if you manage to get an international one you still need a nano sim from our service providers(and they are stil unsure if/when they will get any). Any currently available docks, attachments etc will require you to buy, carry around and use an adapter which may not fit well(think of a cradle dock or base stand)

I'm sure he will be and will still be when you upgrade to the iphone6. The S3 is pretty much future proof (quad, NFC, memory expansion, removable battery etc..) in the hardware department and will ensures that he maximizes the outlay he made buying it. Probably will only need to upgrade in 4-5 years time.

In posts elsewhere elsewhere on this forum I have discussed NFC. To recap, yes, if Apple had included it, maybe it might actually have had a chance of catching on. Until it does catch on, is there a single vendor in South Africa that accepts payment by NFC phone? Just ONE? It is a classic chicken and egg situation. Until you can actually use it, you are just paying for something that adds weight, bulk and complexity for no reason at all. But, yes, you do have it. Maybe one day, when it has been replaced by NFC2.0 or NFC Plus, you will be able to say "I told you so". Whether your NFC will be forward-compatible with that is an open question.

As for the S3 being available now, that was not the question. And does the S3 "fit well" in a cradle dock designed for the S2 or any other Samsung phone? Oh wait,nobody makes those things for Samsung, do they? After all, the dimensions of Samsung's phones change every three months and no dock maker can possibly keep up ...

Phillips AS851. Available at Makro now. 3 other models too.
Works with my wife's S2, my S3, HTC HD2 and HTC Desire HD.
EDIT: Also used the dock with my Galaxy Note before I sold it.

Regarding the "where has NFC been used in SA" question.

I currently use Llama to activate/deactivate certain things on my phone using location awareness. It works 90% well. NFC tags will make it 100% so ordering some off eBay.

I know the answer won't satisfy you, but it sure pokes holes in your attacks. ;)

Agreed, although screen size is a bit of a damp squib imho. Bigger is definitely not better, although options are nice to have.
 
I watched the keynote speech where they introduced the iPhone 5. Seems the haters need to watch it before actually commenting on the perceived lack of innovation.

And by the way I have a S3 so I'm not brand loyal per se.

Also an S3 owner. Watched the event seriously hoping for something big. There was nothing that grabbed me. It looks nice, but it ends there.
Going to put iOS6 on my iPad3 layer today as Sand_man pointed us to a link where they reckon iOS6 has over 200 changes. Hoping like hell it makes me appreciate my iPad.

IMO, Apple hardware is great (but no longer innovative). It is iOS that brings the product down. Wish that would change.

The next big thing for me is probably going to be the Nokia Lumia 920.

Don't think so dude. Getting no offers at R5,400 with case and skin included.
My kids school sent us a letter notifying us that they will be introducing iPads into the school next year. If I sell now, I just have to buy again in a few months at retail price (2 of them). So financially it makes sense now to hold onto it.
So may as well fiddle and hopefully one day find that hidden gem :D

What were you expecting? They added some new features, increased the screen resolution and made the screen slightly taller.

The biggest pity about the S3 is that they decided to make the screen even bigger. Pretty much made it a non-option for those of us who don't want to carry a tablet around.

That depends on your requirements. The average person could run what they need on an old computer. Not really much in the way of revolutionary changes that they require.

Same really goes for most phones if they're well-made.

All I was saying in my OP - sure apple has made improvements over the years with retina, a6, Siri etc. They are all good worthy improvements for someone who wants a new phone and never used apple before, they are great selling gimmicks. But has apple innovated anything new with the iPhone 5, no, except if you call an extra row of apps innovation.

I still enjoy my iPhone but since switching to galaxy it really does feel like something new and innovative.

See, the bait that people are rising to is the statement around "has apple innovated anything new" - that problem's not unique to Apple - no one has innovated anything new - it's just tweaks all round.

Are you sure you're not conflating new/different subjective experience with innovative - I'm an Android carrier and when I used the wife's iPhone for a while, it felt revolutionary and innovative - then I realised it's just new and somewhat different (like Flipboard - then I got used to currents, now Flip feels jaded)
 
I remember the iPhone 4S being up to 7 times faster than the iPhone 4, so would that make the iPhone 5 up to 14 times faster than the iPhone 4?

I suppose it would be innovative to increase the speed so much while reducing the size but surely this is also largely due to all the other manufactures (who make iPhone parts) improving the performance and size of their products? Like Samsung, Foxconn, Toshiba etc etc. It would be natural for these manufactures products to become better and smaller.

I know Apple products can be really nice but it seems like they create way more hype than what their products sometimes deserve, I suppose this is just really good marketing? But sometimes it seems they can be dishonest about the hype and how amazing it is to try and keep investors happy, they do seem to try really hard to put on a big show.

Also, imho it really doesn't beat the S3 hands down
