So we upgraded a 4mb line to a 10mb line for a family member. According to the rocket scientists at the Telkom store, the current D-Link DSL-2750U Router (link here) is not capable of handling the 10mb line, so they promptly gave us a new modem being the Pace 921VNX (link here), and kindly told us we can keep the old modem. Am I missing something or did Telkom give us an early Christmas present?

It's not? According to D-Link… "FAST INTERNET CONNECTION :Latest ADSL2/2+ standard provides Internet transmission of up to 24 Mbps downstream, 1 Mbps upstream"

Did you sign anything? Perhaps extending your contract with Telkom?

Yes, unfortunately my dad was only able to get to the store and from what they told him, they cancelled the old contract, and he signed a new one. :S

Tell him to take it back as (a) they lied to him and (b) you don't want a contract as it is not required if you don't take the router/modem.

Hope you're right - I've got the same modem!

You should insist on a new modem :P demand it, if all else fails, show them this thread. On second thoughts that'll confuse them more.

Ha ha, I'm afraid I bought this router willingly, about 2 years ago. It's not the Telkom branded one (if that makes a difference). There were some teething issues in the beginning, otherwise it's treated me well. When its time comes, I'll replace it with one of those new TP-Links with Wireless AC - not because I need one, but because I want one \:D/

I too can now confirm the modem is compatible with 10Mbps :)

I can confirm I am running 10 meg with the 2750U, however, I am running an older ADSL2+ profile. I'm guessing Telkom have set up your 10 meg on VDSL (maybe you're too far from the exchange to get close to 20), which is why you need the Pace router.

OP wants 10Mbps ADSL, not 20Mbps VDSL. Their old modem is more than capable of handling 10Mbps ADSL and could probably go up to 20Mbps ADSL if they wanted it.

Can I?

Man I read the title and positive tone of the first post and come expecting a happy story, but no, just more diddling.

I installed the dlink at my bosses house and got Charl to switch from vdsl 20mbps to ADSL 20 mbps.

Has been there for like a month now and is syncing at 20mpbs. So if your line and exchange can support it, I don't see not

Assuming their line stats/distance to the exchange is fine. Maybe they couldn't get 10 meg on ADSL because they were too far away so Telkom wrangled 10 meg on VDSL.

You know, the way some people are only running at 12/13 meg on the 20 meg profiles because they're too far away to get stable 10 meg using an ADSL profile.

I'm using the D-link 2750U and it's sync'ing at 20Mbps ADSL2+ without any problems. SNR's are even a tad better compared to the ZYXEL VDSL router I have as backup.
